What does it mean to be self-conscious, and how does that self-consciousness connect us to an objective world? These were among the questions explored during a two-day workshop on Dr Anil Gomes’s (University of Oxford) recent OUP monograph, The Practical Self, hosted by the Department of Philosophy on 11-12 June.

Structured as a chapter-by-chapter discussion, the workshop brought together staff, students, and researchers for in-depth conversations on each part of the book. Sessions were led by members of the department Lilian Alweiss, Richard Teague, Jim Levine, and Julian Bacharach, along with Jim O’Shea (UCD). Dr Gomes opened the workshop with introductory remarks and joined a concluding roundtable that drew together themes from the two days.

The department extends its thanks to all who took part and to Dr Gomes for sharing his work.
