“Hello everybody and welcome on board. Fasten your seatbelts and join us on our journey into space!” was the opening that welcomed the packed hall of school pupils at the performance.

As part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of Modern Languages at Trinity College Dublin, the German Drama Club (Theatergruppe) presented its original student production “Unter uns! Among us!” in a special outreach performance on 22 April 2026 at the Teachers Club on Parnell Square, Dublin 1.

The event welcomed secondary school students and teachers from three schools—St. Ciaran’s Community School (Kells), Christian Brothers College Monkstown Park, and St. Declan’s College (Cabra)—with over 70 attendees in total. The performance followed a successful run earlier in the year, including two shows in Dublin and one in Vienna.

Active for more than 20 years, the Theatergruppe aims to create a space for community and creative engagement with the German language, where students can discuss current issues in a variety of ways. This year’s production “Unter uns! Among us!”, developed and performed by first year students from the German Department, explores themes of technology, the future, and human identity through language, music, video, and dance.

Together with the young audience the players set out on a galactic journey into the futuristic present — where the future has already begun! Students and teachers described the experience as very enjoyable, appreciating the play’s humour, interactive moments, and the opportunity to sing along. Many found it inspiring, especially as it gave them a lively impression of what studying German at Trinity College Dublin can be like.

The Theatergruppe is already looking forward to diving into new themes and starting work on their next production for 2027...
