How to publish new/updated content

1. How to publish a content item:

  • Scroll to the bottom of your content item
  • Click on the dropdown arrow next to save changes
  • Select save and approve
  • The content item appears green - "approved" in the content tab
  • In your site structure, the traffic light symbols to the right of your sections, give you a guide on how many content items are active (green), pending (orange) or inactive (red).

2. How to publish a section:

  • In your site structure, click into the section you want to publish.
  • In the general tab, click on the status dropdown - select Approved.
  • The section will appear grey in the site structure.
  • If it's red in the site structure, it's set to inactive in the general tab and won't appear on the website.
  • If it's orange in the site structure, it's set to pending. It won't appear on the website, but you can still preview the section.

Publishing times

After you select save and approve, your changes are queued for the next site publish.

You won't see your changes instantly

Publishing time is currently set to 40 minutes past the hour. i.e. 1.40 pm, 2.40 pm..

The publish cycle itself takes time to complete, depending on the number of changes to the TCD website.

The cycle time could take up to the 30 mins.

Depending on when you made your edits, your changes might not be visible for 1hr and 30 mins.

Publish button

Blue publish button

There is a publish button in a number of locations:

  • In the content item, there is a green publish button on the top right of the page
  • In the content tab, there is a blue publish section button on the top right
  • In the actions menu on your site structure, you have actions to publish section/publish branch

Only use these publish buttons sparingly

Example: You have added the wrong course date to a page and need to rectify it quickly

  • Publish buttons push your changes to the top of the queue for the next site publish
  • Your changes still won't appear instantly - see more about Previewing

Why shouldn't I use the Publish button?

If everyone uses the publish button, it can slow down the entire site publish, as more changes jump the queue.

Preview before publishing

Why is previewing a good idea?

Always preview your page before publishing; once you save and approve, the content is queued for publishing. If you have made a mistake, it could be live on your site for a few hours before the next site publish occurs.

You can preview a page when it is pending, but not when it is set to inactive.

There are a few 3 places where you can find a preview button:

  1. In your site structure, highlight the section, use the actions menu to select preview section (3rd option).
  2. Preview your page using the preview button at the top left of the content tab.
  3. When you open a content item, click on the preview button on top right of page.
