5 Useful tips

Page titles should consist of a maximum of 70 characters. If the page title exceeds this number, you will have "…" after the description in your Google search result. It is also worth noting that the title should not be kept too short as it will not provide a sufficient description for the searcher. Furthermore, it is important to put the targeted keywords close to the start of the title.

Meta descriptions should contain no more than 156 characters. If the description contains more than this, you will see "…" after the description in your Google search result. In order to attract searchers to your meta description, try to include one or two mentions of the main target key phrase.

H1 tags identify the main topic of a page. A unique H1 tag should be created for each page and should target the same main keyword as your page title. N.B. each page should contain only one H1.

Title Tags are considered by search engines to be the most important place for identifying keywords. It is also important to note that the number of characters used is less than 70 characters as if you use more than 70 characters the text will be truncated. When writing a meta title tag it is also important to ensure that the focus keyword of this page is placed at the start of the tag if possible.

Your targeted keyword should be mentioned at least four times within the copy on your page. Furthermore, in one of these instances, highlight the keyword by using a <i>, <b>, <strong> or <em> tag. It's also important to note that your keyword should not be mentioned more than 15 times as Google could flag your page as spam.
