Dr. Larisa Florea
Assistant Professor, Chemistry

Biography

Larisa studied organic chemistry and chemical engineering at University Politehnica in Timisoara, Romania (B.Sc. Hons). In 2009 she joined the Adaptive Sensors Group at Dublin City University where she earned her Ph.D. in materials chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Dermot Diamond. Larisa began her postdoctoral career at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, and in 2016 she achieved a senior position as Team Leader in Materials Chemistry and Microfluidics. In 2018 Larisa was awarded an Irish Research Council Laureate grant and an ERC-Starting grant that enabled her to establish an independent research career in School of Chemistry and AMBER.

Research Expertise

Description

My research comprises several distinct strands of research in the soft matter realm, including development of new stimuli-responsive polymers, 3D fabrication technologies, micro-fabrication of polymeric actuators & sensors, and development of smart micro-vehicles.

Projects

  • Title
    • Artificial micro-vehicles with life-like behaviour (ChemLife)
  • Summary
    • The ChemLife project seeks to develop new bio-inspired microscopic vehicles fabricated from stimuli-responsive materials using advanced 3D fabrication technologies. These soft, smart vehicles will be designed to swim or crawl through fluids to actively recognise, sense, and respond to the external environment.

  • Title
    • The Development of Chemopropulsion-based Fluidic Transport Systems
  • Summary
    • This project signifies a curious meeting of intriguing chemistry and biomimicry, allowing for the motion of microscopic droplets, which behave like cargo-carrying vesicles found in biology. This work has tremendous implication for the area of molecular diagnostics and biological analysis, as the concept combines the field of droplet microfluidics (possibility for DNA amplification, polymerase chain reaction and sensitive detection of rare mutant DNA) with a precise optical control of the process. Light provides contactless stimulation, biocompatibility and a non-invasive and highly precise control of these vehicles in both time and space.
