Research Expertise

Description

I am a theologian, and an ecclesiologist, with an expertise in medieval theology, specifically in the theology of Thomas Aquinas. My interpretation of Aquinaa is brought to bear on contemporary contemporary ecclesial concerns and contemporary societal concerns. My research combines a gender-sensitive approach with a deep grounding in Aquinas' thought and scholarship. This is a really important era for my work. The unique perspective of my scholarship addresses issues of leadership in church, and the question of truth-telling in society. My first book, published by the Thomas Instituut in Utrecht, a highly prestigious centre, dealt with Aquinas on theological education. I built on this approach with a series of papers in international journals, looking at questions on leadership, priesthood, authority, coming up with an approach which is faithful to Aquinas's work, but critical of patriarchal prejudices. This distinctive vision informs my essay in the edited volume, Social and Political Roles of Church in Today's Pluralist Society, currently at press with Notre Dame University Press (2019). The controversial and radical nature of claims about a proper role for women in church leadership necessitates a deep rooting in the tradition. That my research on Thomas Aquinas informs my work is significant. This work brings an original contribution to the contemporary debates and controversies about women and leadership in academy, church and society. My current research is focused on Aquinas and truth-telling, a topic which has singular relevance to the current political and cultural landscape. My interpretation of Aquinas demonstrates that the virtue of truth-telling is an integral component within the complex virtue of justice. The argument is that where truth-telling decays, society decays. My research is disseminated in key note papers at international conferences (January 2017, Dublin; June 2017 Porto; January 2019, Cambridge), working towards a monograph. The invitation to contribute to the Provost's Review (2007) is recognition of the importance and relevance of my research and scholarship.
