Menu Help
Your left menu follows the same order as your site structure in the CMS, i.e the order of your folders.
When you create a new section, "show in navigation" is automatically ticked in the section options in the general tab. To hide a section from the menu, you untick this field.
If you add a new folder/section, it will appear at the bottom of the structure, but you may want it to appear in a different spot on your left menu.
Reordering the left menu/ site structure
To reorder your left menu, you can reorder the folders in your site structure.
Click on your top folder, with the name of your website, go to the last tab “more” and select child sections from the dropdown.
If you have more than 10 folders, go to display records and choose “All”.
Change the position by placing your cursor on the crosshairs symbol to the left of the folder name in the column labelled “Order” and dragging it up or down to the position you would like it to display in your left menu.
Folders such as Ga, Site config, prefooter and buttons are only visible in the backend and will not be visible in the left menu – so you can place these at the bottom of your site structure.
Permanently deleting sections and content items
Once you set your section to inactive in the status of the general tab, this page won't appear on the website anymore. But it's a good idea to keep your site structure tidy and only keep the folders and content items you are using.
Create a folder called “to be deleted” (if you don’t have this folder already) and set it to inactive in the general tab. It will appear red in your site structure. Untick show in navigation as an extra precaution - it won’t show in your menu when inactive anyway.
Move any sections or content items you no longer need into this folder to keep your site structure tidy, using the move action in the blue actions dropdown to the right of the folder or content item.
When the digital team is tidying the system, we will empty this “to be deleted” folder with no warning.
Only move items to this folder if you are sure you want them permanently removed from your site.
How to change a menu name
To change a menu name open the section, go to the General tab and rename your section in the Name field.
Be aware that changing your menu name will also change your URL.
How to add a Right Hand Side (RHS) Menu
You must have two things to be able to add a RHS menu to the page:
- A basic page layout
- Sub-sections
A basic page layout has space on the RHS for the menu to appear, as opposed to a full page layout, such as the homepage, where content fills the full width of the page.
Page layouts are set by the Digital team. Contact us through the IT Service desk, if you'd like a RHS menu to appear and you don't think you have the correct page layout.
You must have subsections underneath the section where you'd like the rhs menu to appear, otherwise, there is nothing to display in the menu.
In the general tab, tick "show menu" on each section and related subsection (the branch).
Section names and URLs
In the CMS, the section or folder name corresponds to the name in the left navigation AND it also outputs to form the page URL.
How page URLS are created:
- The URL is based on the section/folder name in the general tab of the page
- All letters in section names convert automatically to lowercase in the URL
- Spaces become hyphens
Tips for naming sections
Don't leave a space at the end of your section name
This creates a hyphen at the end of the URL Example: tcd.ie/digital/wcms-/
Don't use special characters in your section name - & ( ) ! @ *
They output as an additional hyphen. e.g. News & Service Announcements becomes https://www.tcd.ie/news--service-announcements/
