TIME offers an exciting 6-week online course in Impact Evaluation Methods and a follow-on 1-week module on Impact Evaluation methods in Agriculture and Food. Our online courses are designed to help participants answer essential questions of policy and programmes at their organisations: How to measure causal impact, and what are the channels of such impact?  
The development of these courses was supported by Irish Aid.

Impact Evaluation Methods: An Interactive and Collaborative Course (6 weeks)

Starting date: 24 April, 2023

Our flagship 6-week online course in Impact Evaluation Methods provides participants with a strong grounding in Randomised Control Trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental methods, process evaluations, and quantitative methods for understanding impact.    
Our 6-week online course is: 

  • Interactive: Mixture of interactive/video/audio online sessions that allow participants to master the concepts at their own pace, followed by live online tutorials with Trinity Professors. 
  • Collaborative: Participants benefit from a collaborative project and presentation on an impact evaluation design for a policy or programme of their choosing. 
  • Mixed Learning Methods: Course content includes videos interactive presentations, quizzes, data exercises, collaborative work, live tutorials, and links to advanced reading. 

Throughout the course, participants will have the opportunity to develop their own design for an impact evaluation.   

What will you learn? On completion of the course: 

  1. You will understand various techniques of impact evaluation and the criteria used to select the appropriate method.  
  2. You will develop the skills to design impact evaluations.  
  3. You will understand the practical challenges of implementation.  
  4. And you will acquire tools necessary to critically assess impact evaluations.  

The course comprehensively covers the different aspects of impact evaluation such as: 

  • Programme Theory Mapping 
  • Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) 
  • Quasi-experimental Methods 
  • Mix-Methods Evaluation 
  • Survey design 
  • Process Evaluation 
  • Hypothesis Testing  
  • and Cost Benefit Analysis 

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate from the Trinity Impact Evaluation Research Centre.* 

*Completion of assignments and engagement in peer feedback is the requirement for course completion. 

Impact Evaluation Methods in Agriculture and Food (1 week)

After of our main 6-week Impact Evaluation course, we offer a follow-on module on Impact Evaluation Methods in Agriculture and Food. This course is a well-timed option for participants on the 6-week course who wish to gain more experience applying impact evaluation methods or have an interest in Agriculture and Food. The module is also perfect for prospective participants interested in Agriculture and Food who have prior understanding of impact evaluation methods, perhaps completing a previous version of our 6-week course.  
This module builds on the material in our 6-week  Impact Evaluation course, specifically covering the research on demand and supply side challenges/solutions in Agriculture and Food.  

The course covers the following topics:    

  • The key features of the agricultural sector in developing countries   
  • The challenges facing the agricultural sector in developing countries:   
    • Technology adoption and innovation   
    • Property rights   
    • Access to markets   
    • Risks and risk coping   
    • Food security   
  • How impact evaluation tools can help us understand how to address these challenges.   

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate from the Trinity Impact Evaluation Research Centre.*
