COP 17 - United Nations Biodiversity Conference

This conference comes at a critical halfway point in the global effort to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. Running from 19 to 30 October, the meeting will take stock of progress, identify where countries are falling behind and, crucially, consider how to accelerate action over the next four years.

COP 17, the global biodiversity conference is taking place this year in Yerevan, Armenia.

Trinity College Dublin Vice President of Biodiversity and Climate Action Jane Stout is attending as a leader in biodiversity, as an academic and as the co-founder of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. She will speak on a panel discussing the impacts of invasive species on pollinators.

20% of Ireland's native species are at risk of extinction, which is higher than the global average. Ireland plays an important role at this conference due to the current EU Presidency and we do have a good track record for nature diplomacy, getting the Nature Restoration Law passed at EU level as one example.

Even though there is more engagement around biodiversity, we don't have action that is ambitious enough at the scale and urgency needed.
