Biography

Nicola Marchetti is currently Associate Professor in Wireless Communications at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He performs his research under the Irish Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications (CONNECT), where he leads the Wireless Engineering and Complexity Science (WhyCOM) lab. He received the PhD in Wireless Communications from Aalborg University, Denmark in 2007, and the M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from University of Ferrara, Italy in 2003. He also holds an M.Sc. in Mathematics which he received from Aalborg University in 2010. His collaborations include research projects in cooperation with Nokia Bell Labs and US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, among others. His research interests include Radio Resource Management, Self-Organising Networks, Complex Systems Science and Signal Processing for communication networks. He has authored 140 journals and conference papers, 2 books and 8 book chapters, holds 4 patents, and received 4 best paper awards. He is a senior member of IEEE and serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal since 2018 and the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking since 2017.

Research Expertise

Description

Due to a combined communication engineering and mathematical education and research profile, my work touches upon theoretical aspects of modern communication networks, as well as their practical design challenges. In my career to date I've focused on aspects that turned out to be crucial in the affirmation of the current generation of wireless networks (5G). I've taken the lead in proposing and investigating: (i) A new theory of wireless networks based on complex systems science and its application to network analysis and resource management; (ii) Several component technologies for 5G and beyond wireless communication systems, including massive deployment of low-power base stations and massive multiple antenna arrays. My plan is to combine both these research strands in the next few years, leading to a new theory and practice of physical layer and resource management in future moving communication networks, which will enable a new theoretical understanding of networks which is long due. Over the past few years, my contribution to my research field has considerably grown, as did my status and reputation within my scientific community. I started from supervising one PhD student soon after I arrived in TCD in 2011, and now I am involved in the supervision of 5 PhD students and 4 post-doctoral fellows (and I supervised 7 more PhD students till completion and 8 other post-docs in the past). I have been invited to give presentations in internationally established conferences and/or international advanced schools (I gave 16 to date), and to be a visiting professor in prestigious academic institutions in USA, Japan and India in the recent past. I am currently planning to consolidate what is already a very promising and fast-growing body of work, establishing me among the leaders in the science and engineering of communication networks, and giving me a concrete possibility to influence this research area and community for the years to come.

    • FIREMAN (Framework for the Identification of Rare Events via MAchine learning and IoT Networks)
  • Summary
    • The Internet of Things (IoT) is creating a new structure of awareness - a cybernetic one - upon physical processes. Industries of different kinds are expected to join soon this revolution, leading to the so-called Factories of the Future or Industry 4.0. Our considered IoT-based industrial cyber-physical system (CPS) works in three generic steps: 1) Large data acquisition / dissemination: A physical process is monitored by sensors that pre-process the (assumed large) collected data and send the processed information to an intelligent node (e.g. aggregator, central controller); 2) Big data fusion: The intelligent node uses machine learning techniques (e.g. data clustering, pattern recognition, neural networks) to convert the received ("big") data to useful information to guide short-term operational decisions related to the physical process; 3) Big data analytics: The physical process together with the acquisition and fusion steps can be virtualized, building then a cyber-physical process, whose dynamic performance can be analysed and optimized through visualization (if human intervention is available) or artificial intelligence (if the decisions are automatic) or a combination thereof.

    • IoCT (Internet of Complex Things)
  • Summary
    • The project aims finally to build a distributed network management framework for dense, distributed and heterogeneous IoT networks based on complex systems science paradigms. There are many communication technologies and testbeds but they do not talk the same language and solutions cannot be tested on multiple platforms, at the same time, in order to extract actionable knowledge the elements of a network and their interactions need to be modelled efficiently and complex systems science is very much a science which studies interactions between processes. The first part of the work deals with building a powerful and flexible taxonomy to describe how elements of an IoT network, interact with one another in a system-of-systems framework. Subsequently, a cross layer simulation frameworks will be designed to allow the study of interactions between all the network variables form PHY to application. A time-series causality analysis will be implemented to determine how a local action at a specific time can impact global behaviour in the future. Finally, the network behaviour is going to be studied with complex systems science to determine the most relevant processes in the network and develop distributed solutions once all the actionable variables are identified and the figures of merit are defined (by the data itself rather than by prior expert knowledge). The research builds upon the concrete work done in the biostatistics fields about structure learning (network inference), in complex systems science about inter-node interactions in time and space for causality, in practical network testing using real-life testbeds and IoT protocol design. The framework envisioned will be used to study and redefine how heterogeneous dense networks are designed and tested to allow seamless integrations of technologies and services.

    • COCODIMM (Complexity and Control of Distributed Massive MIMO)
  • Summary
    • Massive MIMO in both, its co-located and distributed variant, has become an important part of future 5G plans so it needs to be understood well to be fully utilised. The nature and the scale of massive MIMO systems both imply existence of complexity observed in complex systems science manner, especially in the distributed massive MIMO case. Complexity in massive MIMO has not been investigated so far, therefore this research aims to fill this gap and grasp its complexity features by providing quantification, qualification and useful models of massive MIMO as a complex system. As a natural extension, this research also deals with devising control algorithms based on Massive MIMO models developed from complexity standpoint, verification of these algorithms and their implementation on real Massive MIMO systems, together with a thorough mathematical analysis using tools from control theory. Finally, this research will introduce reversible computing in Massive MIMO, investigating its effects on control and performance. Results of the research are diverse, ranging from publications explaining complexity in Massive MIMO setting, over novel tools and metrics developed for the specific application of complex systems science to Massive MIMO, to functional controller prototypes based on algorithms developed. This in turn represents the multidisciplinarity of the project as well, combining telecommunication systems with complex systems science, control theory, but also embedded system design and computer science. This project also includes some promising preliminary results of cellular automaton modelling and antenna selection control of Massive MIMO system.

  • Title
    • FD-M2Mcomm (Cross-Layer Full-Duplex Design: Potential for Machine-to-Machine Communications)
  • Summary
    • Recently machine-to-machine (M2M) communications (M2MCom) has emerged as an enabling technology for the practical realization of Internet-of-Things (IoT). Successful implementation of an M2MCom network demands high reliability, low latency, real-time operation and handling of huge amount of data, which, in turn, offers several challenges like connectivity among large number of machines with diverse functionalities, wide coverage area, resource and quality of service (QoS) constraints. In this research project, a cross-layer full-duplex (FD) design will be proposed to address the above-mentioned challenges of M2MCom systems. Adaptive FD MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) beamforming in the physical (PHY) layer will be combined with a request to send (RTS)/full-duplex clear to send (FCTS) mechanism based FD scheduling in the medium access (MAC) layer. The potentials of this design will be studied against two major applications of M2MCom, which are Smart Grids and Intelligent Transport System, and its performance will be evaluated through both numerical analysis and quantitative simulations. This project will also investigate the applicability of the proposed design for M2MCom in the millimetre-wave (mm-wave) frequency band using realistic mm-wave outdoor and indoor propagation models. Finally, the FD cross-layer PHY-MAC design will be validated practically through implementation on an IoT-based testbed.

    • Wireless-SPIne (Wireless Security and Privacy for INtErnet of things)
  • Summary
    • The "Internet of Things" (IoT) paves the way for the future world, where most daily objects are connected into Internet. Although it allows a multitude of new applications, facilitating daily lives and stimulating economy, it also poses security risks due to potential malicious attacks which can be executed remotely. Some of this risk comes from the use of a genuinely open wireless medium. Furthermore, since wireless IoT devices are often required to operate from small battery operated platforms, the use of computationally expensive cryptography algorithms is severely limited. The proposed research will develop a wireless communication system, where the transmitted information is readable only within certain physical area, while being perceived as noise elsewhere. This will be achieved by interdisciplinary research, combining reconfigurable antenna technology, multipath propagation channel modelling and MIMO-inspired signal processing. The system is expected to minimize computational complexity, facilitating secure communication between small nodes, as required for secure IoT applications. It aims to provide wireless SPIne, supporting security for all IoT products and devices. IoT is predicted to stimulate the global economy, introducing new products and even creating new markets with currently unconceivable applications. It is expected to open multiple business opportunities, while also transforming the community and facilitating daily lives. However these benefits will not survive without sufficient high-quality and affordable security, indispensable to build consumer's trust and confidence. The project addresses this issue by providing novel solutions to guarantee security, even when operating from small platforms.

  • Title
    • Addressing the future wireless network capacity scaling trough massive MIMO and millimetre Wave technologies and a user centric networking
  • Summary
    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication network is expected to connect everything and everyone, including the traditional human-to-human communications but also those between autonomous smart entities, like buildings, vehicles and sensors. Applying previous practical experience at Nokia Bell Labs in the design and implementation of cutting edge 5G massive MIMO prototypes, the aim of this PhD is to further develop and enhance the performance of 5G networks. One of the main challenges of this project is to deal with the 5G traffic heterogeneity, i.e., delivering a larger capacity for broadband services (e.g. virtual reality), while providing reliable services to a multitude of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To address this challenge, the focus will be on a new 5G heterogeneous network comprised of two disruptive technologies, massive multiple-input multiple-output and millimetre-wave, proposing novel theoretical analysis tools and machine learning algorithms to realize an efficient integration of both technologies into the new network and providing an efficient radio resource management able to deal with network dynamics. A novel theoretical framework is needed to understand the performance of thousands of new 5G base stations communicating with millions of users, and gain key insights to develop tailored algorithms. Machine learning will be the basis of such algorithms, allowing for the first time to leverage the vast amount of information that millions of nodes can produce at the physical and medium access control layers. The outcome of this project will be novel analysis tools and algorithms that allow an efficient 5G operation, enhancing the network capacity by a factor of 100x as compared to current deployments, as well as the publication of research articles, patents and standardization contributions that will help define the technology advantage of Nokia Bell Labs and enhance the scientific contribution of the Irish ecosystem to the new communication era.

    • Complex Systems Science as a General Framework to Model and Analyse Functional Aspects of Wireless Networks
  • Summary
    • The central goal of the project is the development of a completely novel approach to network monitoring techniques. To develop these techniques we draw on concepts of an information theoretical (i.e. complexity) and biological nature (mainly degeneracy), using them to underpin a new approach to communication networks. Development of our framework will proceed in a layered fashion, with a modelling layer forming the foundation of the project, supporting an analysis layer. The modelling phase will cultivate techniques to capture the significant attributes of networks and the interactions that shape them through the application of tools such as graph theory abstractions to derive new metrics that holistically describe a network. The analysis phase completes the core functionality of the approach by linking our new measures to overall network performance. Together these phases empower multi-scale examination of telecommunications networks. Furthermore, in order to maximize the impact of the work, the proposed approach is rooted in the most relevant, near-future architectures and use cases in 5G networks. Through these efforts we will initiate a completely new way to analyse and engineer networks, founding a new theory and practice of telecommunications not currently anticipated and immediately relevant to telecommunication advancement.

    • Enabling Cellular Networks to Exploit Millimeter-wave Opportunities (NEMO)
  • Summary
    • The aim is to explore the creation of networks utilizing device-to-infrastructure links to support dense, high-capacity networks, such as those required in sports arenas, theatres, and transportation hubs. Critical to these networks are high-capacity, yet uncertain links that change rapidly due to the more pronounced effects of factors such as shadowing and micro-mobility on millimetre-wave links (i.e. operating in the 30-300 GHz frequency range). Such networks demand the development of new wireless network architectures and new resource allocation techniques based on new measurement based channel propagation models and assessed against new capacity analyses.

    • Advanced Dynamic spectrum 5G mobile networks Employing Licensed shared access (ADEL)
  • Summary
    • Flexible spectrum usage is a promising enabler of spectral efficiency for next generation wireless broadband networks. In order to deliver the next order of magnitude gains in terms of overall spectral and radio efficiency envisioned for 2020, wireless access will have to be revisited both from a policy as well as from a technology innovation perspective. On the policy side, with the emergence of heterogeneous and small cell networks, the original ''licensed vs. unlicensed'' spectrum usage model has recently given way to the ''licensed shared access (LSA)'' paradigm wherein incumbent operators may allow smaller ones to share their spectrum at specific times and places, according to an agreed set of rules. In order to deliver the targeted gains, the LSA approach needs to address specific technology challenges. In ADEL we plan to address the following key challenges within the LSA wireless access paradigm: i) the dynamic and optimised allocation of the spectral and power resources at a short time scale (on the order of seconds to even milliseconds), ii) the guarantee of Quality of Service to the users of all participating spectrum-sharing networks and iii) the minimisation of the overall energy expenditure of LSA networks. As key technology enablers towards these goals, we propose the use of i) decentralised spectrum sharing techniques that allow both faster decision making and less control overhead; ii) advanced collaborative sensing between the cooperating wireless networks and individual nodes for better network coordination; iii) advanced frequency agile transceivers; and iv) self-optimisation techniques at the LSA networks to further minimise the EMF radiation and the interference caused to the incumbent networks. With the above, we believe that ADEL will lead to future heterogeneous wireless networks of an order of magnitude higher capacity and energy efficiency thus setting the roadmap for the adoption of spectrum flexible broadband wireless systems by 2020.
