Dr. John Gerard Dinsmore
Associate Professor, School of Nursing & Midwifery
Biography
Dr. John Dinsmore is an Ussher Associate Professor of Digital Health and Integrated Care and Deputy Director of the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SNM). Over the course of his career he has gained extensive international and national experience leading major projects to develop and evaluate digital health innovations in practice, particularly within the Irish healthcare setting and across European member states. In particular Dr. Dinsmore has been recognised for his leading role in advancing the use of digital health technologies to improve self-management and care for individuals living with multiple chronic conditions (multimorbidity). This includes understanding the role played by an individual's care network (family, informal and formal carers and health care professionals) as part of any self-management regime. Outcomes from his research aim to understand and maximise the appropriate use of digital health technologies as part of a person-centred approach to home and community based health and well-being management. His work also seeks to strengthen academic, health service and industry collaboration in order to translate research outcomes into innovate practice within health and social care environments.
Since 2015 Dr. Dinsmore has secured significant competitive research funding totalling over 13 million euros as a principal investigator from a variety of international and national award bodies such as the European Commission (EC), Science Foundation Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. This has included 3 awards under the EC Horizon 2020 (H2020) programme. He is Coordinator/Lead PI of two H2020 projects; ProACT (http://www.proact2020.eu) and SEURO (http://seuro2020.eu) and TCD PI in the H2020 MSCA VisuAAL (https://www.visuaal-itn.eu) project. Within these roles he has lead multi-country development and evaluation of digital health innovations bringing together a wide range of key stakeholders from academia, citizens, industry, health services, legal and policy.
Informed by his research focus, Dr. Dinsmore's teaching covers the fields of healthcare innovation, digital health, health psychology and behavioural science across both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Within his teaching Dr. Dinsmore embeds key findings from his research ensuring students are introduced to the state of the art in digital health innovations exploring their design, development and evaluation, providing students with a range of innovative theories and methods (e.g. design thinking, behavioural science, business case development) to drive their creative thinking and generate potential solutions for the challenges of modern healthcare.
Since joining Trinity College Dr. Dinsmore's leadership roles have included Deputy Director of the TCPHI, Lead TCD Principal Investigator (PI) for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Health, Knowledge and Information Community (KIC) and Course Director for the post-graduate programmes in Mental Health at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. He was also previously a Member of the Board of Directors for the EIT Health KIC UK/Ireland Co-Location Centre (CLC). In this role he led TCD activity to support the transition of the CLC to Ireland post-Brexit during the COVID pandemic. Dr. Dinsmore has also served on a number of School and College strategic and research committees (e.g. EIT Steering Committee, Tangent Academic Oversight Committee; SNM Research Committee; SNM Post Graduate Committees; Creative Arts Practice Steering Committee). He presently serves on the College Central Scholarship Committee, Industry PhD working group and TCPHI Executive.

- SEURO - Scaling EUROpean citizen driven transferable and transformative digital integrated health and social care
- Summary
- Building on a previously awarded Horizon 2020 project, this EU-funded SEURO project aims to advance research into the use of digital health technologies for chronic disease self-management for older patients. Specifically, it will build on the ProACT platform, which was developed to empower individuals over 65 living at home with chronic diseases/multimorbidity to better understand and independently manage their health and well-being. In this context, SEURO engages a multidisciplinary EU consortium of public and private organisations to consolidate EU research assets into a new comprehensive approach for the scale-up and transfer of digital integrated care solutions. The aim is to develop three novel implementation support tools to help implement and assess solutions to patient needs.

- visuAAL
- Summary
- Europe is facing crucial health and social care challenges due to the demographic shift towards an ageing population and related economic impact from increased provision of care. Innovation in Active and Assisted Living (AAL) solutions has the potential to address these healthcare and social demands while profiting from the economic opportunities driven by the Silver Economy. Advances in computer vision have given video cameras the ability of 'seeing', evolving their functionality to become 'smart cameras'. However, the monitoring using cameras can be seen as intrusive and violating rights to privacy, because of the concern that raw video images could be observed by unauthorised viewers or stored for inappropriate use. Acceptance of such technologies is also low because they create a sense of Orwellian "Big Brother" surveillance. The aim of VISUAAL is to bridge the knowledge gap between users' requirements and the appropriate and secure use of video-based AAL technologies to deliver effective and supportive care to older adults managing their health and wellbeing. VISUAAL will seek to increase awareness and understanding of the context-specific ethical, legal, privacy and societal issues necessary to implement visual system across hospital, home and community settings, in a manner that protects and reassures users; outputs will stimulate the development of a new research perspective for constructively addressing privacyaware video-based working solutions for assisted living. This aim will be achieved by providing a transdisciplinary and crosssectoral combination of training, non-academic placements, courses and workshops on scientific and complementary skills. This holistic training to high achieving early stage researchers will be facilitated by the consortium, a community of researchers and industrial partners from different fields (computer science, engineering, healthcare, law, business, sociology) and other stakeholders (users, policy makers, public services

- Advancing Social Inclusion through Technology EmPowerment (aSTEP)
- Summary
- Social inclusion is an important element of well-being for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Intellectual Disability (ID). Research has highlighted that social inclusion is facilitated through access to education and employment. Despite this, people with ASD and/or ID have low rates of participation in these domains. Research has demonstrated that Assistive Technology (AT) shows great promise in increasing participation in education and employment. Notwithstanding recent technological advances, there are low rates of adoption of AT throughout Europe by service providers, educators, employers and policymakers. There are several areas of unmet need including: high abandonment rates of AT, lack of inclusion of people with ASD and/or ID in the research process, lack of interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration and poor match between technology and the individual with ASD and/or ID. The aim of the COST action is: Build an interdisciplinary, intersectoral pan EU and beyond, network which will enhance social inclusion and empowerment of individuals with ASD and/or ID. This will be achieved by: Evaluating the development of novel AT by providing an interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration between all stakeholders using a translational approach to establish standardised practice guidelines for design, development and deployment of AT. Creating knowledge, by providing a database of current AT technologies and their match to employment and educational contexts for users with ASD and/or ID. Promoting the adoption of evidence-based guidelines in relation to use of AT across settings and populations and propagating the use of inclusive design and rigorous research approaches.

- SMILE - Supporting Multimorbidity Self-Care through Integration, Learning and eHealth
- Summary
- This is a research collaboration between the TCPHI, NetwellCASALA at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) and Caredoc and is funded under the Slaintecare Integration Fund. SMILE is a new, innovative service to enable Irish citizens to proactively self-manage their health and well-being from home supported by a digital platform and nurse-led remote assessment and triage. Currently there are 150 patients registered for this service which has been trialed in the Carlow-Kilkenny health area. Each participant has two or more conditions including diabetes, COPD, chronic health failure, and heart disease. Participants will use a selection of healthcare devices based on their needs to monitor their health and wellbeing. SMILE uses the ProAct technology platform, developed by researchers in the TCPHI and NetwellCASALA as part of the Horizon 2020 ProACT project. This platform is used alongside clinical triage provided by nurses in Caredoc to support older people with chronic conditions to self-manage their health and wellbeing at home. Through the ProACT CareApp, patients can review their data, set goals and receive education on their conditions and their management. Caredoc triage nurses monitor all this data from patients using a custom designed triage application that is part of the ProACT platform. This highlights when a patient has an abnormal reading. The nurses have established escalation protocols to deal with alerts where the data is outside the expected threshold levels, for example, advising a patient to visit their GP. The nurses also provide additional support including educating and motivating patients. Initial research findings indicate that older adults actively engage with digital self-management and the triage service, and experience numerous benefits including improved self-management skills, improved health and wellbeing, more appropriate healthcare utilisation, stabilisation of symptoms over time and greater peace of mind. SMILE is due to end on the 31st December 2021.

- Personalised Support for Reconciling Health and Wellbeing Information of Varying Complexity and Veracity Towards Positive Behavioural Change
- Summary
- This PhD project will introduce a new approach to visual scrutability that can facilitate users in examining complex and sometimes conflicting information, specifically in the context of personal health-care, towards changing behavior to improve their health. This research will examine how scrutability, an approach to facilitating the inspection and alteration of user models that underpins a system's interaction with a user, may provide a means for empowering users to interact with such difficult to reconcile information in order to promote behaviour change. Defining a new approach that will enable users to reflect upon and control what information they consume in a personalised manner is proposed as a key element in fostering enhanced understanding of their own health-care and wellbeing. This PhD will build on results from the H2020 Provenance and ProACT projects.

ProACT aims to develop and evaluate an ecosystem to integrate a wide variety of new and existing technologies to improve and advance home-based integrated care for older adults with multimorbidity, including associated co-morbidities. The ecosystem will connect four key care and support models central to understanding and implementing effective, continued and coordinated patient centric care (including self-management). These models are 1) homecare (including informal care); 2) hospital care; 3) community and social care and 4) social support networks. Trial sites in Ireland and Belgium will use Living Lab facilities to ensure co-design of ProACT technologies, and implement proof of concept trials involving national health services, patients and their formal and informal care networks. Clinical status information, therapies and activity tools will be deployed for the conditions of: chronic heart failure (CHF), diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Tools to support mild cognitive impairment and detect early onset dementia are included. Commercial potential will be validated during the project supported by a European feasibility study in Italy to assess the cultural and political determinants for adoption and scalability of the ecosystem.
