Dr. Alex Cabral
Research Fellow, Geology
Biography
I am a Research Fellow specializing in hydrogeology, with a focus on groundwater-surface water interactions, submarine groundwater discharge, and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. My research applies hydrological and geochemical techniques, including isotopic tracers, to quantify groundwater-driven fluxes, assess water chemistry, and investigate subsurface flow in fractured and karst aquifers, estuaries, and coastal zones. Using high-resolution, automated field instrumentation, geochemical tracers, and numerical modeling, I examine solute transport, water quality, and carbon dynamics. My work advances understanding of groundwater-driven nutrient and carbon fluxes, their influence on aquatic ecosystems, and their role in water resource management and climate adaptation.

Research Expertise
Projects
- Title
- Groundwater age distributions for the sustainable management of groundwater resources in Ireland
- Summary
- This project will quantify groundwater residence and travel times in Irish catchments to improve understanding of nitrate transport and support sustainable groundwater management. It combines multiple environmental tracers, including stable and radioactive isotopes, to trace water from recharge to discharge. A nationwide isotopic map of the water cycle will be developed, alongside a citizen science network to enhance monitoring coverage and public engagement. The findings will inform policy and help assess the impact of land use and climate change on groundwater quality.

- Title
- Tracing inorganic carbon in Irish groundwater
- Summary
- This project investigates the sources and transformation of dissolved inorganic carbon in Irish groundwater. It focuses on how aquifer type and agricultural practices influence carbon cycling and buffering, using carbon isotopes to trace key biogeochemical processes.
