We are delighted to share that Dr Shipra Nagar from the NatPro -Trinity Centre for Natural Products Research, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been awarded funding under the Research Ireland Pathway Programme. Her project is entitled: Trash to Treasure: Utilising Organic Waste to Produce Bioactive Galactans for Novel Therapeutic Approaches (GalSB).
The project, which secured €676,344, aims to develop a robust platform for polysaccharide-based therapeutics through a multidisciplinary approach. This will integrate polysaccharide chemistry, molecular biology, computational pharmacology, optical imaging, metabolomics and bioeconomy principles.
The award highlights the growing importance of natural products in drug discovery and sustainable innovation. Completion of this project will establish key physicochemical fingerprints of bioactive polysaccharides and develop a robust protocol for isolating bioactive galactan polysaccharides from industrial byproducts, thereby enabling the development of sustainable polysaccharide-based therapeutics.
We are really looking forward to the impactful research and collaborations that will emerge from this work.
