It's not every bike race that promises picture-perfect scenery, Italian cuisine and routes lined with cheering locals. The L’Eroica vintage bike race has been taking place for almost 30 years in the hills of Tuscany, and this year, our colleague Dr Oliviero Gobbo will be among the competitors.
Oli will be joined on Saturday 3rd October by Adriele (Discipline of Medical Gerontology, School of Medicine), and TCD graduates Andrea, Gerry and Guido. Their 132.5km route will be packed with 5,000 vintage cyclists, taking them over dusty roads and medieval villages – but the team can only ride on bikes made before 1987! (They will be hiring old ones in Italy).
Every donation will support patients and families affected by brain tumours, while also contributing to vital research.
As brain tumour researchers, the team sees first-hand the impact that devastating cancers have on patients and their families. Despite being one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in young people, brain tumour research remains significantly underfunded. Together with Kate O’Connor and Almudena Moreno Borrallo, Oli recently co-founded the Irish Neuro-oncology Society to help advance brain tumour research in Ireland.
