Palynology Lab

The Palynology and Organic Petrology Laboratory is equipped with 4 fume hoods certified to BS7258:Part 1 and Part 4:1992 (HF-rated) for decalcification and acid digestion of silicates allowing extraction of organic matter (OM).

A Prolabo PS34 Maxidigest 3.6 microwave digestion system is available for rapid (~40 minute) extraction of OM from small samples (~5 g). The lab is also equipped for routine use of schultz and fuming nitric for oxidation of OM.

The laboratory is equipped with a safety shower and first aid kit including calcium glauconate gel. Access to the laboratory is restricted to authorised and trained staff and postgraduate students. The laboratory is managed by Prof. Geoff Clayton and operated by Specialist Technician Francis Hendron.
