Activities supported:

Extraction of tephra (volcanic ash) shards from cryptotephra layers (ie not visible to naked eye) within marine, lacrustine and peat archives using:

  • Density separation using SPT heavy liquid
  • Wet sieving at 125, 80 and 25 micron
  • Tephra picking and mounting
  • Hand polishing

Equipment

  • LW Scientific Ultra8Y centrifuge
  • Nikon Optiphot microscope
  • Warner M33 micromanipulator
  • Hotplates

Note:

Igneous rock samples or samples/items that may contain volcanic ash are not permitted in this laboratory.
