My research spans both the contemporary environment and "deep time". In order to better understand processes operating in the natural environment, I utilize a variety of field-based, textural, geochemical and geochronological approaches. Much of my work is in the area of U-Pb geochronology, with a view to improving our understanding of mineral chronometers and refining analytical techniques. I am also research active in radon monitoring and modelling (Natural Hazards) and in utilizing biominerals (e.g. cold-water corals and fish scales) as proxies for environmental change.
The following are examples of my current research topics:
- Radon: Ireland has some of the highest indoor radon levels in Europe. My research has developed novel methodologies for measuring and modelling indoor radon and modelling the spatial distribution of the adverse health effects of radon exposure. My research has informed legislation in Ireland and I collaborate with several international bodies including the WHO / IARC and JRC. I am currently academic mentor of an iCRAG funded Post-Doctoral Research Fellow investigation the Public Perception and Understanding of radon risk perception and decision making surrounding radon testing and remediation.
- Biominerals as environmental archives: Biominerals have the potential to act as high-resolution proxies for environmental change. Cold-water corals (e.g. Lophelia pertusa) form a significant biomass is the North Atlantic offshore Ireland and represent an under-explored potential as a high-resolution proxy for environmental and climate change spanning the present day to Miocene. I am currently working with GMIT and the MI on a pilot project investigating the use of micro-chemistry of fish scales as proxies for geographic affinity to trace freshwater-marine migration of salmon. I have also worked with human and animal archaeological samples to better understand diet, migration and social / farming practices.
- Evolution of the early Earth: I am currently working on geochemistry and geochronology of Archean rocks from Mauritania (West African Craton) with Kinross, Archean-Paleoproterozoic rocks from the Singhbhum Craton India with Presidency University, Neoproterozoic rocks from the Urals with the University of California Riverside and terrane evolution of Ireland with the Geological Survey Ireland and Northern Arizona University.
- The nature and timing of mineralisation in relation to magmatic and tectonic processes: My research provides absolute age and geochemical constraints of economically significant mineralisation events. Current projects include Archean Au mineralisation in Mauritania, Palaeoproterozoic Cu-Mo porphyry deposits in Namibia, Ordovician Au-Cu-Zn-Pb mineralisation in SE Ireland and Devonian Cu-Mo mineralisation in western Ireland.
