Congratulations to our colleague Dr Peter Harrison, Associate Professor/ Consultant in Periodontology, who was announced Teacher of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to undergraduate dental science education.
On presenting the award, Class Rep Grace Feighan said, “Over the past several years, Dr Harrison has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and kindness in his teaching. He is highly regarded by students not only for his expertise and commitment to education, but also for the generosity with which he gives his time and support.
In 2025, Dr Harrison took on even greater responsibility within the hospital when he became Director of Undergraduate Restorative Clinics. Nevertheless, he remains approachable and willing to help, whether in clinics, corridors, his office, or the common room.”
Dr Harrison previously won the award in 2018 and 2019 and also received the Dean's Award for Innovation in Teaching in 2015 for a multimedia resource to train dental professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease.
Professor Lewis Winning, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, said: "Peter's commitment to our students goes well beyond what's expected of him. As Director of Undergraduate Restorative Clinics and a key member of the Division of Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology, he gives freely of his own time, is always available to guide and support students, and has driven real improvements in how the clinics are run and how students experience their training. His work on the e-portfolio and student progression systems in particular has made a lasting difference to the undergraduate programme. What makes this award especially significant is that it was student-nominated — a true testament to the difference he makes. This award is thoroughly deserved."
Dean of Dental Affairs and Head of School also expressed her appreciation for Dr Harrison’s exemplary student-centred approach, adding that this award “is a reflection of the respect, gratitude, and admiration felt by the students who have had the privilege of learning from him.”
