Research Expertise

Description

My research engages with the challenge of achieving a sustainable and healthy planet which is the key research goal in Trinity's strategic plan. . To fund my research I have won €6.9M (€2.8M-PI) in grants from e.g. the EU Commission, Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Research Council, the Naughton Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, industry and alumni. My primary research area is within the domain of aeronautics with the objective of producing greener aircraft with lower emissions. My research spans the full breadth from fundamental discovery to applied research with much of my work achieving high test readiness levels (TRL) to be adopted by the aviation industry: Airbus, Dassault, Safran, Rolls Royce, Leonardo to help reduce environmental noise for the good of society. I have collaborated with each of these companies in my research. I am the leading researcher in the country in Aeroacoustics and my reputation within Europe is solidly established: . I am the only Irish representative on the Aeroacoustics Specialists Committee of the Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS-ASC) which is the technical committee established by the EU member states' Aerospace Societies to serve and support the scientific and industrial aeroacoustics community in Europe. . I was the national focal point for aeroacoustics in the EU funded Coordination and Support action X-Noise EV. . I have been PI for TCD on five FP7 EU funded collaborative projects: TEENI, WENEMOR, ALLEGRA, ARTIC, X-Noise EV and my sixth: INVENTOR (H2020) has just begun. . In addition, I was full project coordinator for three of them (WENEMOR, ALLEGRA, ARTIC), managing a total budget of €5.4M and 15 partners from universities, research institutes and industry. In 2016 I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Notre Dame and NASA Glenn to research innovative low noise solutions to reduce aviation noise for a sustainable environment. Additional international research fellowships were to Stanford University and the national nuclear research facility in Lisbon and a national research laboratory in France. I have published 38 journal papers (32 since my last promotion), 62 peer-reviewed conference papers (27 at AIAA/CEAS), 2 book chapters, I have edited one special issue in a journal (International Journal of Aeroacoustics, on which I am a member of the editorial board) and I have a patent submitted in China to reduce the noise from high-speed trains. . I have developed research collaborations and have published papers with over 20 international research labs, universities, and industries, including Harvard, Stanford, Bell Labs, Notre Dame, three locations in China, Sherbrooke, KTH, BME Hungary, Roma Tre, Delft, Airbus, Leonardo, the national aerospace institutes of France (ONERA), Germany (DLR), Italy (CIRA), the Netherlands (NLR) and the USA (NASA). . The future direction of my research is in metamaterials: Mechanical and Acoustic. Publications on these topics attract high citations and I currently have a paper accepted in the Nature publication: Scientific Reports, collaborating with Bell Labs. I have funded research that will develop and test novel sound-absorbing metamaterials (liners) on a NASA test rig in the US and I am currently collaborating on other papers with different groups in both Harvard, China, and Japan.

  • Summary
    • Project Coordinator and P.I.: Dr. Gareth J. Bennett, total budget €1,400,000. The objective of the activity under this CfP is the test of a full-scale Main Landing Gear fuselage-mounted architecture sized for a high-wing regional aircraft configuration in a Wind Tunnel facility. This proposal considers a complete architecture including all necessary features from an aeroacoustic point of view including: gear struts, wheel pack, bay cavity and doors, fairings and portion of fuselage. A low noise technology shall be investigated following a selection process to be completed within GRA activities. The concept of an acoustic mirror shall be developed resulting in a design which will enable accurate far field sound measurements via a sectioned model with an acoustic reflector on the half plane. The consortium will design and manufacture a modular full-scale mock-up of the MLG integrating low-noise devices as indicated from the GRA ITD Member. The model shall be modular in order to test both the baseline and the low-noise MLG architecture with one or both gear legs. Advanced aero-acoustic measures including partial coherence techniques, orthogonal beam forming and deconvolution beam forming will be utilized to fully assess the noise emission of the landing gear. These techniques will quantify the source distribution, mechanisms of noise reduction and provide an innovative tool for use in aeroacoustic problems of this nature. ARTIC has put together a consortium which comprises of one of Europe's most distinguished Universities, a Research Institute in aeronautics of international renown and an SME with specific competence in aerospace design, manufacturing and structural analysis. All partners have participated and delivered in EU projects, in some cases extensively including coordination. In addition, subcontracting will be given to the only aeroacoustic wind tunnel company in Europe capable to perform these tests. • ALLEGRA
  • Summary
    • (Project Coordinator and P.I.: Dr. Gareth J. Bennett, total budget €2,000,000) Advanced Low Noise Landing (Main and Nose) Gear for Regional Aircraft. During landing approach, when engines are operating at low thrust, the noise of the airframe contributes strongly to the overall noise signature of modern aircraft. Airframe noise is generated by airflow around components of the aircraft. The main sources of airframe noise are therefore the high drag elements such as landing gears and also the high lift devices on the wings. For larger aircraft, it is the landing gear noise that dominates. This project will therefore focus on the design and test of Main and Nose Landing Gear noise reduction concepts. ALLEGRA has put together a consortium which comprises of a well known aeroacoustic wind tunnel company and some SME's from around Europe with specific competence on landing gear design, manufacturing and structural analysis. In addition two of the EU's most distinguished universities will take the lead in computational aeroacoustics, noise measurements and data analysis. All partners have participated and delivered in EU projects, in some cases extensively including coordination. The outputs of ALLEGRA will result in pragmatic, validated solutions which will reduce noise, emissions and improve fuel consumption. These solutions will be developed in conjunction with an EU aircraft manufacturer to ensure feasibility and to reduce time to implementation. • Summary
    • (Project Coordinator and P.I.: Dr. Gareth J. Bennett, total budget €2,000,000). Wind Tunnel Tests for the Evaluation of the Installation Effects of Noise Emissions of an Open Rotor Advanced Regional Aircraft. WENEMOR has been developed in response to the requirements described in the Clean Sky-ITD-GRA call for proposals referenced under SP1-JTI-CLEAN SKY-2010-4 and named "Aero-acoustic noise emissions measure for advanced Regional Open Rotor A/C configuration". WENEMOR will address the topic by conducting aeroacoustic measurements in an open test section of a large low speed wind tunnel, on a complete reduced scale modular model of different configurations of an aircraft with installed open rotor systems, operating in both "pusher" and "tractor" modes. The aim of these tests will be the creation of an aeroacoustic database that will have two main applications: to characterize the emitted noise and evaluate the installation effects of these different configurations and to allow the validation of GRA ITD aeroacoustic simulation codes. • TEENI
  • Summary
    • (P.I.: Dr. Gareth J. Bennett, TCD Budget €400,000) Turboshaft Exhaust Engine Noise Identification: broadband noise source identification in helicopter engines. The TEENI project is an FP7 level 1 (Theme 7 - Transport) 1st Call EU- funded project. It focuses on Helicopter Engine Exhaust Broadband Noise, and tries to identify the origin of this noise from external measurements only.Unlike Turbojet engines, Turboshaft engine gases are ejected at low speeds, leading to almost no jet noise. Although the turbines generate high amplitude tonal nose, their high RPM and blade count result in the frequencies being above the audible threshold. However, a previous European project: Friendcopter has demonstrated through flight tests the significance of medium-frequency exhaust engine noise for the Take-Off flight certification condition. The origin and generation mechanisms of this exhaust broadband noise "Corenoise", have not yet been fully defined: low frequency content is generally related to combustion phenomena in the literature, but the sources above 1kHz are not understood. Understanding the origin (location and physical mechanisms) of this broadband noise range is the main objective of the TEENI project, with the final industrial goal being to better attenuate this exhaust noise. http://www.xnoise.eu/index.php?id=384. http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/89869_en.html

    • Application Of Universal Design Principles To The Design Of Domestic Appliances
  • Summary
    • Universal Design has the goal of creating an environment which is accessible/usable by to as many people as possible. Evaluation of the usability by older people of a range of home appliances (heaters, iron, toaster etc) showed that significant biomechanical difficulties were experienced with operating certain push buttons and dials. A review of the literature and mechanical testing of the required force and torque for these controls showed improvements could be made by relatively minor design modifications. Evaluation of these modifications in a second series of patient tests confirmed the major potential for improvement in existing products. With Dr. Ciaran Simms.

    • Silencer
  • Summary
    • Significantly Lower Community Exposure to Aircraft Noise. The largest ever European aircraft noise research project, known as SILENCE(R), was launched On April 1st 2001. A consortium of 54 companies collaborated for six years to validate new technologies for reducing aircraft noise by up to 6 decibels as of 2008. The European Commission's Fifth Framework Programme for RTD is funding 50% of the project whose total budget exceeds 110 M Euro. Unsteady pressure measurements in the combustion can of an aeroengine can be used to identify the contribution of combusiton noise to near and farfield noise. TCD's contribution to Silencer was multifold. In the first instance, an internal and external transducer network to instrument full scale gas turbine engines was specified. The data acquired from these aero-engines during full scale static tests were processed with novel signal processing algorithms developed at TCD. The analysis allowed core noise source identification and a technique to determine liner efficiency to be developed. (Technical and Administrative Manager for TCD: Dr. Gareth J.
