Overview
The M.Phil in international history offers students the chance to pursue historical research outside the bounds of the nation state. The program allows students to immerse themselves in the questions of the past, develop research skills and become familiar with scholarship in the fields of transnational, comparative, and global history. Students can choose courses from a variety of geographic specialties in modern history, especially including European, Chinese, Japanese, U.S., Ottoman and Middle Eastern, and environmental history. Topics of interest could include the movement of culture, people, ideas, or trade across national borders, or issues such as imperialism, globalisation, transnational social movements, human rights, and the history of war and conflict.
Structure
The course consists of six modules. The two mandatory modules include a year-long, core module on International History: Methods and Themes and an International History Skills Seminar. Two elective modules can be selected from a range of specialties depending on staff availability, including continental European, Chinese, U.S., Middle Eastern and environmental history. The final module is the capstone project, a dissertation based on students’ own independent research on a topic in international history, individually supervised by a member of staff. Who Should Apply?
The course is designed for students who want to immerse themselves in research questions in preparation for a PhD, undertake or deepen study of foreign cultures, develop new areas of interest, or understand the historical roots of current international events for careers in journalism, government service, or NGOs. They will usually already have a potential field of study in which they hope to write their dissertation, an independent research project developed together with a supervisor.
Please note that students wishing to come to Trinity primarily to study Irish history should not apply to this M.Phil but to the M.Phil in Modern Irish History
How To Apply
Applications should be made online through www.tcd.ie/courses/postgraduate/faculty. Up to date information on fees is provided on the Academic Registry website.
Applications typically open in November for the following September. We receive a large number of applications and it is a highly competitive process. As Trinity operates a ‘rolling offer’ system in which applications are considered on a rolling basis, the M.Phil can be full before the final deadline. We therefore recommend applicants to apply as early as possible after the portal opens in November.
Applicants with English as a foreign language should be aware that this course involves extensive written assessment. A high standard of English is therefore required; please contact the M.Phil director to discuss this question.
Awards and Scholarships
Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships are awarded to high calibre students from non-EEA countries to study in Ireland for a period of one year. They provide a €10,000 stipend towards living costs and Trinity provides a full fee-waiver to recipients for one year. All applicants will automatically be considered for the following internal awards:
- The Constantia Maxwell Faculty Studentship, with a value of 3000 euro, is usually offered to a student in any of the School's MPhil programmes.
- The School of Histories and Humanities also offers one bursary of 1000 euro, to be deducted from the course fees, for each of its MPhil programmes.
Awards will be made on academic merit. All completed applications with an unconditional offer by the deadline of June 30th will be considered for the internal awards.
