A Warm Welcome from the Director

Dear Visitors,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Trinity Centre for the Environment website, a cornerstone of interdisciplinary environmental research and education at Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin.

Originally established in 1978 as an Environmental Science Unit, the Trinity Centre for the Environment emerged from a strategic vision to unite world-class expertise in environmental science, climate science, earth systems science and sustainability under one roof. Building on decades of pioneering work in environmental disciplines we have grown into a vibrant hub that fosters collaboration across disciplines.

At its heart, the Trinity Centre for the Environment drives cutting-edge research and innovative teaching to address the urgent challenges of our changing planet. Our purpose is two-fold: to advance knowledge through transformative projects that inform policy and practice, and to empower the next generation of leaders via educational programmes, workshops, and field-based learning in climate innovation and environmental stewardship.

As a key pillar of Trinity’s research infrastructure, the Trinity Centre for the Environment also plays a vital role for the Island of Ireland. We partner with national and international bodies, industry and communities to deliver impactful solutions in areas such as circular economies, greenhouse gas emission reduction and resilient landscapes, ensuring our work benefits society at large.

I invite you to explore our initiatives, meet our researchers, and join us in shaping a sustainable future. Whether you're a student, collaborator, or engaged citizen, your collaboration strengthens our mission.

Warm regards,

Professor Quentin Crowley
