An online information session will be held online on the 6th of December (09:30 - 10:30) to share information about a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) focusing on dementia inclusive hospital design.

This information session will be of interest to those interested in dementia, or designing for dementia, and will:

  • Introduce the main contributors to the MOOC
  • Outline the background research underpinning the course
  • Provide a course overview
  • Provide information on how to partake in this free course

This course is aimed at a wide range of stakeholders and will develop their knowledge around dementia and the built environment, including:

  • Hospital management when setting strategic objectives or developing briefs
  • Facilities management
  • Healthcare staff working in hospital
  • Design professionals involved in new-build or retro-fit projects

Background to the MOOC

The course was developed by TrinityHaus, Trinity College Dublin (TCD), in partnership with Tallaght University Hospital, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and HOPE (the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation). The MOOC is hosted as a free online course by TCD in partnership with Futurelearn. The MOOC is hosted as a free online course by TCD in partnership with Futurelearn. This MOOC is being supported by the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority; O’Connell Mahon Architects; and the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre (DSiDC) in St James’ Hospital Dublin. The MOOC is based on existing research and a set of Dementia-Friendly Hospital Design Guidelines that were funded by the Health Research Board (HRB) in 2018. This work was completed with the partners listed previously, as well as the HSE (Capital and Estates), the National Dementia Office, Mercy University Hospital, Cork, and Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin.
