Mechanical Workshop

The mechanical workshop supports our undergraduate teaching and research activities. Here we manufacture complex precision components and prototypes for undergraduate and research projects.

Situated on the ground floor of the Parsons building this 270 m2 facility is equipped with state of the art CNC machine tools, conventional lathes and milling machines and welding and fabrication equipment. We are further equipped with a CAD/CAM package to enhance our design and manufacturing capabilities. A list of all equipment can be found here.

Our highly experienced Mechanical Workshop Technical staff are available to assist and guide you through all phases of your project. This includes the design assessment and feasibility, the material selection and the sourcing of associated components. They are further supported by a Chief Technical Officer (Specialist) and a Senior Technical Officer with expertise in instrumentation and mechanical design and also a Senior Attendant who provides invaluable support with our day to day operations. The machining of all parts for undergraduate projects is carried out by our workshop staff. The following video illustrates the 3-step process used in the manufacture of parts here in the Dept. of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Biomedical Engineering:
