Instruments & Equipment

The ESRL operates the following instruments and equipment. The links below give details of instrument capabilities and sample requirements. Users are responsible for determining the appropriate analytical techniques for their project and ensuring that their samples are suitable for analysis before applying for facility access.

Analytical instruments

Zetium WD-XRF

Zetium WD-XRF

High precision, low detection limit analysis of major and trace elements in geological materials. More sample preparation and lower throughput than ED-XRF.

Rigaku ED-XRF

Rigaku ED-XRF

Non-destructive bulk analysis of major and trace elements. Limited preparation and high sample throughput. Higher detection limits and lower precision than WD-XRF.

AMA254 Mercury Analyser

AMA254 Mercury Analyser

High-precision destructive analysis of bulk Hg concentrations.

Multi Elemental Analyser 4000

Multi Elemental Analyser 4000

Destructive analysis of bulk total carbon (TC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), total organic carbon (TOC) and total sulphur concentrations

Sample preparation equipment

PM 400 Ball Mill

PM 400 Ball Mill

Sample grinding and mixing with a wax binder.

LeNeo Fusion Instrument

LeNeo Fusion Instrument

Automated production of glass disks for XRF analysis and acid digestion for ICP analysis.

HTP 40 Pellet Press

HTP 40 Pellet Press

Production of pressed powder pellets for XRF analysis.
