The National Student Media Awards (SMEDIAs) are Ireland’s longest running student awards event. They were created to both celebrate and formally recognise the talent of third level students emerging in journalism, broadcasting and digital media.
Across a range of diverse media fields 9 current Trinity students won awards on 9th April 2025 in Mansion House Dublin.
In the coveted Script of the Year category, Vesela Chavdarova, a current M.Phil. in Screen Studies student won the award, with another M.Phil. in Screen Studies student, Caoimhe McGurrin also nominated for this category.

Vesela’s winning script, “A Measure of Time”, focuses on the story of Marlena Sokolova, whose successful writing career began with a tragic sacrifice kept hidden for years and which she must now confront. Vesela, originally from Bulgaria, joined the MPhil in Screen Studies after completing her undergraduate degree at Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
