The Bulgarian April Uprising of 1876 and Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising - parallels and contrasts more than a hundred (and fifty) years later

A lecture by Dr Bozhil Hristov (Russian and Slavonic Studies) organised by the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies.

This open lecture aims to outline some of the parallels and contrasts between the Bulgarian April Uprising of 1876 and Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising – two key moments of Bulgarian and Irish history which, more than a century (and a half) on, continue to shape the identity and statehood of those countries in two geographically distant, but culturally not too dissimilar, corners of Europe. We will focus on the social and historical background, the outcomes of the two events, as well as what the two movements have in common, including some major figures. The talk will also seek to examine some less studied aspects, such as the roles of women at those key turning points.
