External Examiners

The External Examiner process facilitates continuous improvement of Trinity's taught education provision. Schools are required to minute key recommendations arising from the Courts of Examiners discussion regarding individual programmes for quality assurance/enhancement purposes. Upon receipt of the External Examiner Annual Report, Schools are required to respond to the External Examiner recommendations detailing their acceptance or a rational for non-acceptance of the recommendations and notify the External Examiner of changes that have been made.

At undergraduate level, recurrent or system issues are escalated to the Senior Lecturer by the Quality Office and a meeting with the relevant Head of School/Department and Director of Teaching & Learning is organised to discuss the report. At postgraduate level, following a review of the report by the Dean of Graduate Studies, Schools are asked to respond to the External Examiner and to the Dean on recommendations arising from the Annual Report.

In October 2018, a new External Examiner website was launched as part of a suite of new resources for Schools and External Examiners. A new external examiner email externreports@tcd.ie has been launched to which all external examiner reports are now submitted and a new Central Quality Folder has been developed where staff with the required permissions in Schools can access (i) External Examiner reports, (ii) School and Programme-level data from the ISSE survey.
