Dr. Anne Holohan
Associate Professor, Sociology


Dr Anne Holohan is Associate Professor in Sociology. She is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, the London School of Economics and the University of California, Los Angeles, and from 2004-2006 was Marie Curie International Fellow at the University of Trento, Italy. Her research and teaching interests include organizations, digital technologies, gamification, conflict resolution and disaster management, globalization and comparative social change. Her books include Networks of Democracy: Lessons from Kosovo for Afghanistan, Iraq and Beyond published by Stanford University Press in 2005; and Community, Competition and Citizen Science: Voluntary Distributed Computing in a Globalized World, UK, Ashgate Publishing, 2013. She is currently PI and Coordinator of Gaming for Peace (GAP), a 2 million euro project funded under H2020 CSA and running from 2016-2019. GAP is creating a curriculum of 'soft skills' for peacekeeping personnel and embedding it in a virtual reality game.

Research Expertise


My research interests cover the inter-related topics of conflict resolution, networks, information and communication technologies, organizational and institutional change, gender, soft skills, development, and ethnographic research. I am PI and Coordinator of the H2020 funded Gaming for Peace (GAP) project, which has created a curriculum in Soft Skills for peacekeeping personnel and embedded it in a digital role-playing game with assessment. The game and learning materials are available to the 100+ organization members of the the European Security and Defence College, and the UN and civilian organizations from the end of the project (February 2019).

  • Summary
    • Dr Anne Holohan is Principal Investigator and Coordinator of 'Gaming for Peace', building an online role-playing game to train personnel in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding missions. The project will build a base curriculum and embed it in the game to provide a learning experience in the soft skills of communication, cooperation, gender awareness and cultural competency. The game will allow users to experience simulations of challenging scenarios from conflict and peacebuilding missions to learn communication and cooperation, gender awareness and cultural competency skills. Entering the game as avatars, players will role-play as a member of another organisation, a different gender or nationality, and so will experience a variety of conflict zone scenarios from a range of different perspectives. The 'Gaming for Peace' project has been funded by a €2 million euros grant from the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme. Led by Trinity, it brings together 15 collaborative partners from academia, military, police, civil actors and business, including the PSNI, the Finnish military, the Polish military and Polish police, Laurea University in Finland, the Ted Kennedy Institute at NUI Maynooth, Upskill in Belfast, and Enquirya in the Netherlands. The project is also supported by the European Security and Defence College, which oversees the training of all EU personnel deployed on peacekeeping missions, NATO and a number of UN bodies. The ESDC is piloting GAP (the curriculum, game and assessment) in January 2019.

    • A Power Elite? Mapping Connections Between Formal and Informal Power Holders in Ireland 2002-2008.
  • Summary
    • This project studies the network comprising bankers, property developers and legislators in Ireland during the peak of the economic boom from 2002-2006 and the subsequent crash, 2006-2008. I am mapping the connections between individuals to discover 1) whether or not persons in formal positions of power were linked together through informal networks of power or influence; (2) whether or not persons who did not hold formal political system power positions were nonetheless linked to the formal positions in such a way that they could systematically influence decisions; and (3) whether or not influential persons who did not hold formal political power were themselves also interconnected. This study is exploring the structure of power and the role of elites in Irish society. In particular, I investigate the role of the 'social circle'; specifically, "the interconnection between holders of formal authority and the extent to which holders of formal authority are connected to those who do not have such positions" (Kadushin 1968:690). The social circle is a major informal mechanism which links powerful persons and powerful organizations, and this study gives greater understanding of the impact of such linkages on Irish society not just in specific organizations. It will contribute to a greater understanding of the implications of these relationships for democracy and society in Ireland.
