Students for the Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Theology study six modules. Students choose four core and two optional, elective modules. The course is taught over two semesters, September to April.

The four core modules are:

  • Readings in Classical Theological Texts
  • Jesus of Nazareth: Son, Christ, Word
  • Violence and Grace in the Human Narrative
  • First Words: Theology/ies of the Bible

Elective Modules

  • Theology and the Arts
  • Ministry and Church in a Challenging Era

Lectures are normally on Monday and Thursday evenings.

Students who have successfully completed the postgraduate diploma course may exit with an award of Postgraduate Diploma or progress immediately without collecting the award to the Masters. Students who exit with a postgraduate diploma also have the option to rescind it and return within five years to pursue the Masters course.

Entry requirements are as for the M.Phil. in Christian Theology.

Scholarship applications for 2024-25 is now open. See Loyola Institute Scholarships here

Admission to this course is at graduate level. Applicants will normally hold a good honours degree (minimum 2.1) in theology from a recognised university.

Applicants who have a primary degree in other disciplines will be considered.

Exceptional cases, where applicants do not fully meet the above criteria, but make a reasonable case for admissions otherwise, will be considered by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

The course is delivered full-time over one year, between September and April, or part-time over two years.

Lectures will normally be held on Monday and Thursday evenings. Some elective modules may be held during the day.
