Annual Pre-Commencements / Alumni / Alumnae Event Tuesday 16 April 2019Prof. Iain Atack, Head of Discipline Peace Studies was delighted to host our annual event and to extend a warm welcome to our Guest Speaker, Mr Alex Chance (who completed his M.Phil. in International Peace Studies in 2001, and is now back at the School working towards his doctorate). In his address, Alex described how his M.Phil. had influenced his decision to work on mediation and reconciliation initiatives in the Middle East, and how his experience in that region kindled his interest in the nexus between organised crime and conflict, leading him into the field of international criminal justice cooperation. Outlining his current doctoral research on the intersection of illicit economies, governance and liberal peacebuilding, Alex suggested that the contentious origins and faith-based heritage of the School have together helped to forge an academic environment in which students are encouraged not only to challenge prevailing orthodoxies but also how to disagree well.
