Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement

Date: Tuesday 25th April 2023

Time:12:00 – 14:00 (13:00 – 14:00 optional)

Venue: Online (and optional hour in-person)

Facilitator: Dr Jonny Johnston, Academic Developer

  • A Teaching Philosophy Statement is a short reflective document in which you define, discuss, and clarify your perspectives on teaching and student learning.
  • Teaching Philosophy Statements are typically used reflectively (e.g. for self-development) or for summative reasons (e.g. as part of an application portfolio affording evaluators insight into your ethos of teaching).

The first hour of this interactive workshop (12 – 1) provides attendees with an introduction to teaching philosophy statements (TPS). Colleagues will be supported to develop their own teaching philosophy statement in response to a structured series of writing prompts, working both on their own and collaboratively with peers.

The optional second hour of the workshop (1 – 2) is held as a ‘writing retreat’ hour in room 1.03 in Foster Place – colleagues are welcome to use this supervised writing time to further or finalise their own teaching philosophy statements. Participants will be encouraged to engage in peer review at various points across the workshop.
