Team Based Learning: Optimising Active and Collaborative Learning

Date: 31st March 2022

Time:10:00 - 12:00

Venue: Room 119, Trinity Business School (face-to-face event)

Workshop Leader: Dr Simon Tweddell, Bradford University

Facilitator: Dr Cicely Roche (rocheci@tcd.ie)

This short workshop aims to introduce participants to Team-Based Learning (TBL) by experiencing it as a student would. TBL is a student-centred ‘flipped’ learning and teaching strategy designed to engage students through a process of preparation, assessment and application of knowledge. It shifts the focus of classroom time from conveying course concepts by the teacher to the application of course concepts by student learning teams. Participants will learn the principles of TBL through active and collaborative learning and will learn about and be able to question the expert facilitator on his experiences of using TBL over the last 9 years.

Learning outcomes - at the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Explain the essential elements that make up a team-based learning unit
  • Describe the benefits and challenges of using TBL
  • Plan for the introduction of team-based learning to a curriculum.

This event has been funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
