Paul Candon Wins Postgraduate Trinity Teaching AwardThe Department of Sociology congratulates Paul Candon (TA on the Senior Freshman module 'European Societies' ) for winning a Trinity Teaching Award for Postgraduate Students. Paul was the only TA in the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy who received this prestigious College award. The award recognises exceptional contributions to undergraduate student learning. -
Political Science Lecturer Dr Jacqueline Hayden Receives the Order of Merit of the Republic of PolandThe Polish President awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland to Trinity's Assistant Professor in Political Science Jacqueline Hayden. -
Dermot McAleese Teaching Awards Recognise Commitment to Teaching and LearningTeaching assistants in the School were recognised recently for their outstanding contribution in the pursuit of teaching excellence. Royal Irish Academy Honours Two School AcademicsPeter Simons, Head of School and Chair of Moral Philosophy, and Michael Gallagher, Professor of Comparative Politics, have been elected as members of the Royal Irish Academy in recognition of their world-class academic achievement. -
Two Economics Students Presented with Government of Ireland International ScholarshipsTwo students of the MSc in Economics, Anuj Pratap Singh and Yijie Huang, have been presented with Government of Ireland International Scholarships by the Minister of Education and Science, Ruairi Quinn. -
Survey on Migration from Southern Europe and IrelandDr Camilla Devitt becomes Trinity partner of a new research initiative aimed to understand whether and in what ways the ongoing crisis has affected migration and mobility in the EU, and particularly in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The project is coordinated by the Global Governance Programme of the European University Institute, Florence. -
Trinity Politics Department rated 31st best in the worldIn the 2013 QS Subject Rankings for 'Politics and International Studies' published in May 2013, Trinity College Dublin was rated number 31 in the world, number 8 in Europe, and number 1 in Ireland. Commenting on this achievement, head of department Prof Michael Gallagher said 'This is a tribute to the quality and commitment of the strong academic team in the department, and helps to explain why admission to our undergraduate, masters and PhD programmes is so competitive'. -
Assistant Professor Tara Mitchell awarded Denis Conniffe PrizeThe Department of Economics would like to congratulate Assistant Professor Tara Mitchell who recently won the Denis Conniffe award for best paper presented by a young economist at the Irish Economics Association Annual Conference. The title of the paper was 'Middlemen, Bargaining and Price Information: Is Knowledge Power?' -
Former President of the European Parliament Pat Cox and TCD Economist Antoin Murphy speak on British and Irish Relations in a Changing EUA lecture on British and Irish relations in a changing EU was given by the former President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, Trinity College, Professor Emeritus, Antoin Murphy, and Director of the Centre for European Reform, Charles Grant at the Embassy of Ireland in London on Thursday, May 2nd. -
Public Lecture by Jan Philipp Reemtsma on Trust and ViolenceProfessor Jan Philipp Reemtsma delivered the third lecture in the TCD-UCD Sociology Public Lecture Series, on 22 May 2013. The lecture focused on his new book 'Trust and Violence'. The event was hosted by UCD with opening remarks from Professor Brian Nolan, Principal of the College of Human Sciences and Dr. Andreas Hess, School of Sociology. -
David Newbery gives seminar in the Department of EconomicsThe Department of Economics, in association with the Electricity Research Centre, was delighted to welcome David Newbery (Emeritus Professor of Economics at Cambridge University) to give a seminar on April 26th 2013. -
Ronit Lentin Presented with Global Achievers Award for NigeriaDr Ronit Lentin was presented with a Global Achievers Award for Nigeria 2013 in recognition of her outstanding work as an educator and Associate Professor of Sociology and founder of the MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict. The awards ceremony acknowledges Nigerians living in Ireland as well advocates for the Nigerian community in Ireland. -
TCD team among finalists in the Econometric Game 2013Trinity College Dublin was among the 10 finalists in the internationally respected Econometric Game 2013, hosted April 9-11 by the University of Amsterdam. The team was composed of five postgraduate Economics students: Sara Mitchell (PhD), Benedetta Bianchi (PhD), Lionel Cottier (MSc), Nick Fitzpatrick (MSc), and Jason Somerville (MSc).

Launch of the Student Economic ReviewThis year saw the launch of the 27th Edition of the Student Economic Review. Under the supervision of the Trinity College Department of Economics and SER President Prof John O'Hagan, the review is run by a committee of Junior Sophisters and comprises a selection of the best undergraduate papers from the last year. -
Sociology Trinity Scholars 2013The Department of Sociology congratulates Ciannait Khan (TSM Philosophy and Sociology), Samuel Basil Mayo Verbi (TSM Geography and Sociology) and Ryan Alberto O' Giobuin (Sociology and Social Policy) on being elected as new Scholars of the College. They were among the 90 Scholars announced by the Provost on Trinity Monday, 8 April. -
New masters programme in Politics and Public PolicyThe Department of Political Science is introducing a new masters programme beginning September 2013, an MSc in Politics and Public Policy. Admission deadline 1 June 2013. This complements the existing Masters in International Politics; the admission deadline is also 1 June. -

Wanderlust, 'a surf at lunchtime' and Graduate MobilityThe latest report, published in The Irish Times on 15 April, from the Learning from Poland project reflects on recent fieldtrips to London, Sydney and Melbourne. The project looks at the strategies of Irish graduates in overseas labour markets and compares these with the strategies of young Poles entering the Irish labour market in the 2000s. -
Economics Academic Elected to Fellowship of Trinity College DublinThe Department of Economics is pleased to congratulate Assistant Professor Carol Newman who has been elected to Fellowship of Trinity College Dublin. Trinity College Dublin was founded as a corporation consisting of the Provost, the Fellows and the Scholars. Scholars are elected annually in various subjects on the result of an examination held in Trinity term. Scholarship or research achievement of a high order is the primary qualification for Fellowship, coupled with evidence of the candidate's contribution to the academic life of the College and an effective record in teaching. -
Economics Students Awarded Foundation Scholarship, 2013The Department of Economics is delighted to extend its congratulations to Conor McGlynn (TSM), Feidhlim McGowan (TSM), Colm Farrell (BESS), Sean Healy (BESS), George Leopold Sorg-Langhans (BESS), Catalina De La Sota Bouyssou (PPES) and William Dunne (PPES) who were announced as new Scholars of the College. Scholars are elected annually on the basis of very high achievement in a special examination. -
Award to Dr Jacqueline HaydenDr Jacqueline Hayden has been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland 'for outstanding services rendered to the promotion of Poland's transition to democracy, for acting as a truthful witness to the situation on the ground during the period of martial law and for accomplishments in your journalistic undertakings'. The ceremony at which the Order is to be awarded will take place at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw on 4 June 2013. -
Talk on the EU Blue Card and Circular Migration by Binod KhadriaOn March 6, Prof Binod Khadria, Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology, gave a talk on the crisis of the EU's immigration policy for third-country nationals as part of the Euro-Visions lecture series organised by the Institute for International Integration Studies (IIIS) and the Trinity Long Room Hub (TLRH). The event was chaired by Dr. Daniel Faas. -
Daniel Faas Publishes Volume on Diversity and SchoolingDaniel Faas has edited a special issue of Education Inquiry on 'Ethnic diversity and schooling in national education systems: Issues of policy and identity'. The volume brings together leading researchers who discuss issues of school choice, educational attainment and the role of Muslims in societies across a range of old and new migration destinations. -
Trinity Students Defeat Yale in Debate on the Legitimacy of Enforced TaxationDebating teams from Trinity College Dublin and Yale University recently took part in the Trinity Student Economic Review (SER) debate chaired by the Provost Dr Patrick Prendergast. Debating for the motion, that 'This House Believes that Taxation is Theft', the Trinity team narrowly defeated their Yale rivals in the overall debate. -
Asst Prof Gaia Narciso publishes column on Voxeu.orgAssistant Professor Gaia Narciso has had a column published on Voxeu.org. The article, based on her recent research paper 'Telecracy: Testing for Channels of Persuasion' (joint with Guglielmo Barone and Francesco D'Acunto) examines the impact of media bias on electoral outcomes. -
Talk on Youth, Jobs and Europe by Laszlo AndorThe European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion gave a talk to Trinity students on February 15. Commissioner Andor presented comparative employment figures, with a particular emphasis on youth unemployment and outward migration across Europe. The event was organised and chaired by Dr. Camilla Devitt. -
Film Screening of 'London is Burning'On January 29, Prof Haim Bresheeth (Professor Emeritus of Film Studies, University of East London) presented his film 'London is Burning' followed by a lecture. 'London is Burning' was made during the months following the riots in August 2011, and features a number of key activists and social theorists in conversation about this social event. -
Asst Prof Michael King delivers public lecture in Nairobi, Kenya.Assistant Professor of Economic Policy, Michael King delivers a public lecture on financial inclusion in Sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi, Kenya to an audience drawn from research institutions, policymakers and the banking sector. -
Les Back Delivers Keynote in Sociology Public Lecture SeriesProfessor Les Back of Goldsmiths University of London gave a keynote in the TCD-UCD Sociology Public Lecture Series, supported by the Policy Institute at Trinity College, on 13 February 2013. The title of the talk was 'Live Sociology: Social Research and its Futures'. The event was chaired by the Head of Sociology, Dr. Daniel Faas. -
Departure of Dr Robert ThomsonAt the end of December Dr Robert Thomson left Trinity College to take up a chair at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. In his seven years in Trinity College Robert was an excellent colleague, maintaining a high level of research output and supervising a number of doctoral theses to completion. We wish him well in his new role. -
Saskia Sassen Kicks off TCD-UCD Sociology Public Lecture SeriesProfessor Saskia Sassen of Columbia University delivered the inaugural lecture in the new TCD-UCD Sociology Public Lecture Series, supported by the Policy Institute, on 15 January 2013. The title of the talk was Expulsions: The Fifth Circle of Hell. The lecture series was launched by the Provost, Dr. Patrick Prendergast, and chaired by Dr. Daniel Faas. -

Tom Pegram Appointed New Director of the Policy InstituteTom Pegram, Assistant Professor in Political Science, has been appointed Director of the Policy Institute. Tom will lead development of the Institute's programme of activities which aims to highlight the contribution of philosophy and social science to current public issues. -

Political Science Lecturer Dr Jacqueline Hayden Awarded the PSAI Teaching and Learning Award 2012The Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI) annual prize for teaching and learning aims to recognise political scientists whose disciplinary teaching incites intellectual curiosity in students, inspires departmental colleagues, integrates research and learning and increases student awareness of the significant relationships between politics as theory and politics as practice. -

Paul Kenny joins Political Science Department for 2012-2013Paul Kenny will replace Prof McElroy while she is on sabbatical. Paul, who is completing a doctorate at Yale University, will be teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
