Lucas specializes in fostering dialogue around science, religion, and reality. He has a PhD in evolutionary biology from Harvard and works on the various meanings of 'life' in biology and theology. His work includes historical analysis, the search for life beyond Earth (astrobiology), and bioethics. A priest in the Episcopal Church (USA), he has also worked as a college chaplain, a NASA contractor, and a martial arts teacher. His books include Life in Space: Astrobiology for Everyone, Life Concepts from Aristotle to Darwin, and The End of Final Causes in Biology. He currently serves as project manager and co-director for Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science, a worldwide, ecumenical project linking senior Christian leaders with world-leading science and scientists.
