Competition details
Students can create and enter an artwork as an individual or a group in one of the following categories:
Writing (Poetry/short story) | Write a poem or short story, in English or in Irish, inspired by the Boglands of Ireland (inspiration can be drawn from the history, workers, landscape, healing, wildlife or science of the bog). Submissions may be up to 2,000 words. |

Art | Create a drawing or painting that evokes the Boglands of Ireland (inspiration can be drawn from the history, workers, landscape, healing, wildlife or science of the bog). An entry in the art category should not be smaller than A4 (29.7cm x 21.0cm) or larger than A2 (59.4cm x 42.0cm), submitted in flat format and unframed. It should not be rolled or folded. A photograph or scanned image of the artwork will not be considered. Entries can be drawn or painted in pencil, charcoal, pen or ink, felt-tip markers, crayon, pastel, water colours, gouache, acrylics, oils, poster colour or collage. Prints done from a lino block, wood block or any other method may also be submitted. No computer aided design (CAD) may be entered. No pieces of art under glass may be entered. |
Photography | Respond to the theme ‘the Boglands of Ireland’ in 1-5 images (inspiration can be drawn from the history, workers, landscape, healing, wildlife or science of the bog). An entry in this category should have been taken in the last 12 months. The work can be in colour or in black and white and can be digital or analogue. Submissions must be in hard copy and a minimum 8 x 10 inches in size. |
Music | Write and perform a piece of music or song inspired by the Boglands of Ireland (inspiration can be drawn from the history, workers, landscape, healing, wildlife or science of the bog). The work can be submitted as an MP3 audio file (between 30 seconds and 5 minutes), along with a transcript of the words where applicable. Please include your name and the name of your school as the title of the MP3 file. |

FAQs
Who can enter the competition?
The competition is open to all TY students for the academic year 2022-2023 from the Republic of Ireland.
When is the closing date for submission?
The closing date for submission is Tuesday, 28th February 2023. No late entries will be accepted.
Can I enter more than one category?
It is not possible to enter multiple categories.
Is it possible to enter as a group?
Yes, it is possible to submit a piece of art as a group.
Is it free to enter?
The Boglands Creative competition is a free Irish creative competition open to all TY students in the Republic of Ireland.
What happens after I submit my entry?
The judges will choose four winners from the shortlisted artwork: one winner from each category and possibly one exceptional submission as the overall winner.
When will winners be notified?
A shortlist will be announced in March 2023. The winners will be notified at the end of March 2023.
What are the prizes?
The winners from each category will each receive a prize of €250. There will be one winner per category. In the case of an exceptional submission, a prize of €1,000 may be awarded.
