Formulation Development of Natural Products from Therapeutic Plants

  • In this collaborative project between NatPro and SSPC, we apply processing and pharmaceutical formulation approaches to traditional medicinal tinctures, and create modernised, versatile and stable, bioactive formulations. In this work we use plant tinctures of Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench as a case study. Current interest in the use of Echinacea is focused on its immunomodulating activity. A metabolomics approach is used to determine the impact of pharmaceutical processing on the phyto-chemical profile and thereby the biological activity of Echinacea purpurea tinctures. Subsequently, an assessment of the potential for the use of different solidification methods to convert Echinacea purpurea extracts to powdered materials suitable for inclusion in a drug product or nutraceutical product formulation will be examined.
