Erasmus and Study Abroad
Students who return from studying or working in a European setting often report that the intellectual experience is extremely rewarding, with notable improvements in language skills. In today’s global job market, employers are increasingly looking for graduates who can excel in international environments.

Study abroad during your third year is mandatory for students enrolled in:
- European Studies
- Business Studies and a Language
- Law and a Language
- Computer Science and a Language (CSL)
- Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures (MEELC)
- As well as for those who choose the Single Honours pathway or Joint Honours programmes (except for Irish)
Planning your Exchange
Year 1: Planning your Exchange
It is strongly recommended that you should begin planning your mobility as a Junior Fresh (Year 1). It is during this time that you’ll research where you would like to go for your exchange and what exchanges are possible with your subject combination and pathway. Normally students are expected to study both of their subjects while abroad, unless other arrangements are reached with their Study Abroad Coordinators.
Students can apply to go on either an:
- Erasmus exchange through either one or both of your Subjects
- Exchanges such a Coimbra, ELAN and School-based exchanges
Information Kiosks
The Undergraduate Common Architecture Office (UCAO) Team will be available for in-person queries relating to pathway selection in the information kiosks, on the Arts Building concourse over a three-week period during Hilary Term. Confirmed dates will be posted on the Trinity Joint Honours webpage.
Year 2: Applying for Mobility Erasmus
During your second year of undergraduate study, you can apply to spend one or more semesters of your third year studying at partner institutions. Applications for Erasmus opportunities are made through the Trinity Global office and Programme information sessions will be held in the Michaelmas Term of your Junior Fresh year when the application process as well as your options will be further discussed.
Please note, this application system is for exchanges offered by the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies for the following programmes:
- Single Honours Languages (SH)*
- Trinity Joint Honours (TJH)*
- European Studies
- Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures (MEELC)
If you are a student on a two-subject programme (e.g. TJH), where one of your subjects belongs to another School, you must make contact with their School Office regarding their particular application process.
*Specific information on the process for SH and TJH pathways are outlined on the TJH Erasmus and Study Abroad Exchanges webpage.
Where you can study abroad on Erasmus is dependent on the subjects you study. Subjects have exchange partnerships agreed with various host universities. You will apply through the Subject's Department for the exchange(s) that you wish to go on.
If you are on a Joint Honours pathway you can apply to either one or both of your Subjects exchanges. The host university does not need to have a formal partnership with both subjects, but they must offer both subjects for study and have resources or departments available to support both subjects.
Students can check what exchanges are available for each Subject on Trinity’s Erasmus Exchange Destination List.
Other Exchanges
Thanks to Trinity’s membership of various networks and consortia, students are also permitted to apply to go on Erasmus under the terms of general exchanges, which are open to students in our School, but some restrictions may apply.
The Coimbra Group’s Student Exchange Network, and ELAN are exchanges open to students from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Applications for these opportunities are made directly through the Trinity Global office.
Study Abroad Learning Agreement
You must have a Study Abroad Learning Agreement reviewed and approved by the Study Abroad Coordinator(s) and UCAO to ensure you will meet your academic requirements to progress to your final year of study.
Year 3: Going on Mobility
Your mobility will occur during your Junior Sophister year, either for a full year or one semester exchange. It is essential that you have your Learning Agreement approved and complies with their pathway requirements. At the conclusion of your studies abroad you must submit your Erasmus transcripts to progress to your Senior Sophister year of study at Trinity.
Fees and funding
When you register with Trinity at the start of your exchange academic year, you will pay your usual fees; tuition at the host university is waived and no additional course fees are required while studying abroad.
All other costs, including travel, accommodation, health insurance, and general living expenses, are the student's responsibility. However, subsistence funding is provided by the EU Erasmus+ programme, please check with your Study Abroad Coordinator for more information.
