International Award for Prof Roger P. West for Contribution to Concrete Science

The 4th UKIERI Concrete Congress entitled Concrete: The Global Builder was held at NIT Jalandhar, India and comprised of six simultaneous conferences, with over 200 papers delivered by authors from 17 countries.
One of these conferences was on the theme of Education, Training, Skills and Research and it was dedicated to Prof Roger P. West of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin. He was the recipient of a medal for his “outstanding contribution to concrete science, technology, design and construction”. In his Opening Address to the conference entitled “Sharing concrete knowledge globally,” he referred to lessons learnt during his 8 years lecturing and researching, with academic partners in IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology in India.
In relation to the latter, he referred to his experiences as one of the members of the Trinity team working in partnership with Thapar on the contemporisation of many aspects of their teaching and research. Furthermore, he drew on experiences gained during three month sabbaticals in each of these institutes and has hosted Indian internees, jointly supervised PhD students, Postdoctoral Fellows and faculty members in Trinity. Prof Ravindra Dhir, OBE, Emeritus Professor of Dundee University and the principal driving force behind the UKIERI Congress series, presented Prof West with his commemorative medal.
