Team-based Learning

Team-based learning (TBL), an active learning strategy, addresses the challenges of motivating students to prepare for a class as well as engage in class activities (25). Students are placed in ‘fixed teams’ where they are encouraged to work productively together. They are required to be accountable to both the educator and fellow teammates for their input and their out-of-class preparation. TBL encourages students to foster responsibility for their own learning as well as that of their team (26). Team-based learning (TBL) is a learning strategy where a small group of students work on individual and team-based activities. TBL increases communication skills, which are required in patient care (22). TBL was first piloted in medical education in 2000 and has grown rapidly since (23)
