Supervising Research Students Remotely - Joint session with UCD

Date: 10th Dec 2021

Time:14:00 - 15:30

Venue: Online

Facilitator:Professor Bob Harris, Director of Doctoral Programmes, Karolinska Institute, Sweden

This online workshop was run in collaboration with UCD and is part of an IUA collaborative webinar series which forms part of the Research Supervisor Development Programme for 21-22. With the probability of blended teaching and learning activities being embedded in higher education following the pandemic, supports and mechanisms for remote research supervision need to be contextualized for all stakeholders. Irish universities must facilitate mechanisms which successfully address the many challenges that online supervision has brought to the professional student-supervisor relationship. This seminar seeks to highlight the valuable learning obtained around the pedagogy of supervising research students remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic and the adaptation of this learning in the context of best supervisory practice going forward. Learning outcomes: i) How to effectively engage with remote research supervision, ii) peer to peer learning between participants, iii) Facilitation reflection on pros and cons of remote supervision and iv) supporting the creation of a community of practice in research supervision nationally.
