Getting help

If you wish to attend an appointment with the Student Counselling Service, please consider one of the options below. To book an appointment, please phone us or call into us. We are unable to arrange appointments by email.

If you have any other queries you can call into reception on the 3rd floor of 7-9 South Leinster Street or contact us on:

Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your first appointment to complete important intake forms. These forms are completed on our waiting room PC’s and your answers are sent directly to the counselling service database. All your answers are encrypted and securely stored. Your TCD record is not affected in any way by completing these forms or by attending the service.

Brief Consultation

All students who request a counselling appointment will be offered in the first instance, a Brief Consultation Appointment. We have a large number of pre-booked appointments available at varied times throughout the week. For first-time users of the counselling service, we also offer Lunchtime 'Drop in' Appointments, during Term Time.

In many cases this single opportunity to talk through issues provides enough support for you to manage your situation without further help. In other instances it helps us identify what further supports are available to best meet your needs going forward.

This might include referral to supportive therapeutic groups, information on self-help supports within the service, online therapy programmes or a scheduled appointment to engage in further counselling or in some cases referral to external services.

How to book a Brief Consultation Appointment:
You can book the initial 30-minute Brief Consultation Appointment by calling into the service (3rd Floor, 7-9 South Leinster Street) or by phoning us (01 8961407).

During Term Time, first-time users of the counseling service may call into the service for the daily (Monday to Friday) Lunchtime 'Drop in' Appointment. There are two appiontments available each day, at 1pm and 1.30pm. As these are popular it is advisable to come early to avail of these appointments as they are not pre-booked before arrival.

At peak times students may be allocated to a wait list for counselling if there are no available appointments within 2 weeks. Admin staff will make contact with you by phone or email to inform you of available appointments while on the wait list.

There is an Emergency Counselling Appointment available each day (Monday to Friday) at 3pm. The Emergency Appointment can be booked by calling into the service (3rd Floor, 7-9 South Leinster Street) or by phoning us (01 8961407) on the day it is needed.

Please give us 24 hours notice if you wish to cancel your appointment. Prior notice of cancellations is required in order to allow us time to offer the appointment to another student and also to ensure you do not lose one of your allocated sessions. Simply phone (01) 8961407 or call into the service (3rd floor 7/9 South Leinster Street) and advise us that you will not be able to attend your appointment.
