Residence Abroad Requirement - 2021

It was agreed in June 2020 that for students sitting final examinations in a language in JS or SS in the summer of 2021, the requirement to have spent a minimum of eight weeks in the country where the language you are studying is a vernacular, or in the Gaeltacht if you are studying Irish, is now waived.  For those of you currently in the JS year and planning to continue your language until the end of the SS year, normal regulations apply at this stage, although this situation could change in the future and you will be updated.
For students thinking of becoming teachers in the future,it is important to note that the Teaching Council currently specify that you must have ‘verifiable residential experience of at least two months in a country where the language is a vernacular’. However, it is possible to fulfil this at another time, which may be after you have completed your degree. Please don’t hesitate to contact your department with any further queries.
