Off Campus Access

Access is available to licensed electronic resources (books, databases and journals) to registered students and staff, irrespective of where they are located.

  • Off campus access to electronic resources is not available to visiting readers, who may only use these resources when physically in the Library
  • College members linking to an electronic resource from outside Trinity College Dublin campus locations will select a resource from Stella Search. When they click on the link to the resource, they will be directed to a secure login page to authenticate with their College username and network login password

Users experiencing difficulties with their College username and network login password should contact the IS Services Helpdesk.

Users experiencing difficulties accessing a specific electronic journal (e-journal), electronic book (e-book) or database from off campus should contact the Electronic Resources Librarian or their Subject Librarian.

ATHENS username and password request

ATHENS is an access system which appears very prominently on many publisher sites. Triinity College Library Dublin does not use the ATHENS system to provide access to e-journals and databases. Select the resource from Stella Search and enter your College username and network login password when prompted.

More Advanced Information

Searching using Google

Most users should use the methods detailed above to connect off campus.

Normally, seaches conducted using Google or another search engine off campus will not give access to the full text of academic articles unless they are provided for free by the publisher.

However, advanced users off campus who find a link to a journal, database etc. in Google or another search engine can attempt to access it by placing the EZproxy stem "http://elib.tcd.ie/login?url=" (without quotes) directly in front of the URL of the blocked page, or by using a bookmarklet. If the Library subscribes to that version of the resource access will then be granted after logging in.

  1. Save the following link Trinity College Library Dublin E-Resources Checker (right-click, Add to Favorites or Bookmark This Link) to a bookmarks location such as the Favorites Toolbar (Internet Explorer) or Bookmarks Toolbar (Firefox)
  2. Select and copy the link going to an electronic resource
  3. Click the bookmarklet icon, paste in the link URL into the popup dialogue box and click OK
  4. When presented with the login page enter College username and network login password before being passed onto the selected remote site

The stem "http://elib.tcd.ie/login?url=" or bookmarklet can also be used with links in Table of Contents alerts and other e-mails.

Internet Explorer users may be presented with an error message the first time they click on this bookmarklet and a warning message in the navigation toolbar: "This website is using a scripted window to ask you for information. If you trust this website, click here to allow for scripted windows". Close the error message and click on the navigation toolbar message and "Temporarly Allow Scripted Windows". The bookmarklet should now function correctly.

Bookmarking Library Electronic Resources

Users with favourite journals or databases that are regularly accessed off campus may wish to save the direct links in their Favorites or Bookmarks. This may be done by right-clicking and saving the link to Favorites or Bookmarks before using the link to connect.

By doing this, the bookmark will incorporate the special script that authenticates Trinity College Dublin users for the Library's subscriptions. Users may need to delete and update their journal or database bookmarks in order for this to function correctly.
