Travel Bursary Report April 2024 - Tianxin Zhang
Tianxin "Caesar" Zhang is a 2nd Year PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
On 4th to 6th July, 2024, I participated in the 2024 Annul Conference of European Political Science Association (EPSA) in Cologne. This is the largest annual gathering of the community of European political scientists.
In the conference, I presented the co-authored project with my supervisor Jesse Dillon Savage, “Training for victory: a micro-level analysis of training and military effectiveness in the early 20th century China”, with acknowledgement of the financial support from TRiSS. Specifically, I presented the research design and the findings of our preliminary analysis. We received great positive feedback from our discussants and audiences. They were very interested in this project, especially the original data we collected and generated from archives. We also got some useful suggestions in research design, which will help us improve our work in the next stage.
In addition to the presentation, I also took the chance of networking with some leading scholars and peer researchers in security and military studies. I believe these connections will help my career development as well.
I am deeply appreciative to TRiSS for supporting my trip, which is very important for my research and career.
