Reviewing the Declaration of Independence through the lens of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Professor McCurry will examine the fate of its founding principles in the midst of a devastating Civil War. By revisiting Lincoln’s most famous words, the lecture will explore how the Declaration was reinterpreted during America’s greatest national crisis. It will also reflect on the enduring significance of those principles for our own times.
Professor Stephanie McCurry is the R. Gordon Hoxie Professor of History in Honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower at Columbia University. Born in Belfast, Professor McCurry is a leading expert on the American Civil War, Reconstruction, and the United States in the nineteenth century. Her scholarship has reshaped our understanding of the war and has highlighted the central roles of women and enslaved people in the conflict. She is the author of several influential works, including most recently Women’s War: Fighting and Surviving the American Civil War.
