Do you want to help drive a culture of innovation that provides a platform for continuous improvements in healthcare in the future?
In collaboration with the Trinity College School of Medicine and Health Innovation Hub Ireland, this course will enable healthcare professionals across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors to explore and unlock the potential for innovation to improve health-related products, services and care pathways. The course will equip students with key skills, including critical thinking, empathy, problem-solving, and collaboration. It is a level 9 NFQ blended course comprised of three taught modules and is continuously assessed through written and practical work.

Course Information
This programme provides a comprehensive foundation in idea development, creative problem-solving, and innovation within healthcare. You will gain the confidence and skills to explore a wide range of innovation-related topics, identify and seize emerging opportunities across diverse healthcare settings, and respond to them with focus and precision.
You will develop the ability to critically assess the commercial, social, and cultural value of new ideas, while understanding the end-to-end process of translating concepts into successful implementation. Through innovative problem-solving approaches, including structured brainstorming, ideation techniques, and lateral thinking, you will generate novel solutions tailored to real-world challenges.
The informal learning environment fosters direct engagement with entrepreneurs, academics, industry leaders, and mentors, complemented by valuable peer-to-peer collaboration. This immersive experience enables you to actively participate in and lead the journey of an idea from initial development through to practical realisation.
Programme Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate key theories and concepts of creativity and innovation in healthcare contexts.
- Apply structured brainstorming and ideation techniques effectively.
- Demonstrate empathy with diverse stakeholders to accurately identify their needs.
- Articulate how failure can be leveraged as a catalyst for learning and improvement in healthcare innovation.
- Lead and manage a healthcare innovation project through to successful completion.
- Identify and apply the core steps, tools, and frameworks for discovering, evaluating, and developing new healthcare venture opportunities.
- Employ critical reasoning to define appropriate business models and assess the viability of new ventures.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of financial modelling for new ventures.
- Deliver a professional and compelling elevator pitch for a healthcare venture.

Module 1: Innovation and Creativity in Healthcare (10 ECTS)
This module explores the principles and practices associated with creativity and innovation. It exposes students to frameworks and methodologies for idea generation, problem solving and creative collaboration in order to support positive innovation in a healthcare context.
Module 2 - Opportunity Generation, Recognition and Communication (10 ECTS)
The aim of this module is to provide the student with the tools to generate and recognise entrepreneurial opportunities. There is also a focus on the communication and articulation of such opportunity in an influential manner.
Module 3 - Enterprise Development in Healthcare (10 ECTS)
This module focuses specifically on the creation, development, growth and funding of innovation driven new ventures in healthcare. It is designed to build on the learnings from Modules 1 and 2, and to increase confidence in students in new venture evaluation, viewing ventures through the perspectives of their multiple stakeholders, most notably the potential investor. Over the course of module 3, each student will identify a new healthcare innovation opportunity to explore and deliver as a venture pitch presentation.

Funding Eligibility
Funding eligibility is determined according to the guidelines on the Springboard+ website. Please review the official Springboard+ site for full details on available funding and who qualifies.
Academic Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must normally hold:
- A Level 8 honours degree (or equivalent) with a 2.1 grade or higher (or equivalent GPA) in any discipline from a recognised third-level institution.
References
You are required to submit two references:
- One professional and one academic
- If you graduated more than 8 years ago, you may submit two professional references instead.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you do not meet the standard academic entry requirements, you may still be considered through Trinity’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This allows us to assess relevant academic and professional experience or other qualifications as equivalent. Applications under RPL will be evaluated in line with Trinity’s official RPL policy and procedures.
English Language Requirements
All applicants whose first language is not English must provide official evidence of English language proficiency. This course requires Trinity Band B (Standard entry).

Important notes:
- Test results must be no more than 2 years old at the start of the course.
- If you have completed a primary degree entirely through English, you may request an exemption. You must provide official documentation from the awarding institution confirming that the degree was delivered wholly in English.

These are essential for participating in online components of the course. The use of mobile phones is not encouraged.

Attendance and Participation Requirements
Attendance is compulsory for all scheduled classes, both in-person and online. Students are expected to attend sessions live and in real time.
A minimum attendance rate of 80% at live lectures and workshops is required to remain on the course.
Full engagement is essential. Active participation in classes, whether on campus or online, is a core part of the experiential learning approach that underpins the programme.

To progress in the course, students must maintain at least 80% attendance throughout the programme.
Course Fee Coverage
Springboard+ provides significant financial support for eligible applicants who are successful in their application:
- Unemployed applicants: 100% of course fees covered.
- Employed applicants: 90% of course fees covered, with the remaining 10% payable directly by the applicant to Trinity College Dublin during the registration process.
Eligibility Responsibility
