Our colleague Suryapratim Roy has co-authored a new article with Dimitry Kochenov titled Citizenship is Anti-Rights.

Challenging Hannah Arendt’s iconic phrase the ‘right to have rights,’ they argue that citizenship is not the source of human rights, but is rather fundamentally anti-rights.

The piece explores how citizenship:

  • Allows states to deny freedoms.
  • Destroys social association.
  • Legitimises majoritarian oppression against minorities.
