The Crime and Punishment research group aims to promote research in areas such as criminal law and theory, criminology and penology, evidence and procedure. It aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration within Trinity and beyond. It aims to reach out to legal practice, NGOs and policy-makers working on criminal justice and penal reform. The group employs a range of doctrinal, theoretical and empirical research methodologies.

The current Director of the Group is Prof Mary Rogan. Her research interests include human rights, detention monitoring, and penal policymaking. She is a three-time European Research Council grant winner, recently securing the 2024 POIRE project and the upcoming 2026 DOLI award on dignity in detention. She also leads a 2026 Research Ireland study on custodial complaints. A Trinity College Dublin Fellow, she was appointed Secretary-General of the International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation in 2023.
