Mentoring at Trinity College Dublin

Looking for some help with your career choices? Mentors can help you prepare for the world of work, discuss career options and offer practical assistance with getting jobs or a place on a postgraduate course.

What is mentoring?

Career mentoring is a relationship between a student or graduate (‘mentee’) and a more experienced person (‘mentor’), who is there to support you with developing your career. The purpose of the relationship is the passing on of knowledge, experience and offering advice. Watch this video to learn more.

Finding a mentor

Trinity alumni mentors work in a wide range of sectors and locations. Graduates and students of Trinity can connect with mentors at our in-person and online events and via the Alumni Mentoring page on LinkedIn.

Our annual career inspiration events take place in November (AHSS) and February (STEM) These are a great way to meet graduates from many disciplines working in careers you may be interested in. Check out our events section on MyCareer to find more information and register for the event of your choice.

We also run several smaller events with Schools, Clubs & Societies and other groups around College. These are typically more tailored to specific courses or interests. Full details are posted on our events calendar.

Mentoring is open to all students and graduates of Trinity. Whether you are just starting to think about your future or looking for support after graduation, a mentor can support you to take the next step in your career journey.

Have a plan

• Be realistic in your expectations of how much time and support your mentor will give you. Its good to talk to them about this early on.

• Follow through with appointments made; avoid sending too many requests in a short space of time; and try to make progress independently in the times between your conversations.

• Remember to thank your mentor and to tell them about your successes as well as your problems. This will help your mentor know that the time they spend with you is appreciated.

Set objectives together

• Mentoring is most effective when it has a clear set of goals. Work together with your mentor at the beginning of your relationship to make some SMART objectives. Then make a simple plan to follow through.

• Make sure you review goals regularly together. Be sure to acknowledge what you have achieved together and what the next steps should be.

Take the lead

• As a mentee, you should try to lead the mentoring relationship and make sure it keeps progressing. Your mentor is your guide and helper. Remember be proactive – request their help when you want it and keep them up to date with your progress.

• If you need help taking the lead or are unclear what you want from your mentoring relationship make an appointment to meet with your Careers Consultant through MyCareer.
