Message from the Director - Tríona LallyProfessor Tríona Lally

Welcome to the Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering (TCBE) website. Established in 2002, the Centre brings together Principal Investigators, research fellows, postgraduate students and undergraduate students from the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Science and the School of Natural Sciences in Trinity College Dublin, as well as colleagues from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin and Dublin City University. The aim of the Centre is to promote and facilitate research and education in Biomedicl Engineering and related disciplines, and to ensure this research finds its way into the clinic in order to improve patient care. In 2011, a number of our Principal Investigators moved their labs to the new Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI), which not only provides world class research facilities, but also strengthens links with our colleagues in the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, the School of Chemistry, the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The TBSI is now also the administrative base for the Centre.

The TCBE currently consists of 31 Principal Investigators who closely work with clinicians and industry to engineer solutions to key healthcare challenges. Our Investigators have received funding from numerous national and international funding agencies including the European Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Atlantic Philanthropies as well as from Industry. The research themes of the Centre are Medical Devices & Drug Delivery, Neural, Biomechanics & Mechanbiology and Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine. Details on the publications of our Investigators are available in our people section.

Students interested in studying Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering might be interested in the new undergraduate specialisation in Biomedical Engineering. Students who wish to study Biomedical Engineering in Trinity College Dublin apply to the Bachelor in Engineering degree (TR032). The first two years are common to all Engineering students and at the end of the second year students select Biomedical Engineering as their specialist area. In addition, we offer an MSc in Biomedical Engineering, which aims to provide engineers and scientists with the education and creative skills needed to practice in the medical devices industry in Ireland and focus on important clinical needs. There are also opportunities to join us as a PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher. Please see our current list of vacancies.

Our website gives an overview of the broad scope of the Centre's activities, from Education to Research Innovation, highlighting our research on key health issues in our rapidly changing society. If you would like to find out more about any of the information on our website please email tcbe@tcd.ie
